Overview

NOTE: Compensation determinations will be made based on years of required relevant occupational experience and meeting educational requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Economic Development, this instructor will develop, plan, and deliver Truck Driver Program courses that prepare new students to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Responsibilities include teaching assigned courses through lecture, lab, comprehensive hands‑on demonstrations, cooperative learning, and other instructional methods at on‑campus or off‑campus outreach locations.

This position provides instruction over-the-road and on a controlled driving range, ensuring students gain practical experience in vehicle operation, maneuvering, and safety procedures. Instruction also includes guiding students through required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, range maneuvers, and on‑road driving competencies.

Additional duties include effective classroom and range management, accurate completion of required paperwork, assessment follow‑up, and other instructional responsibilities that support student learning and program success.

Educate students with core knowledge and current developments in the discipline. Provide regular curriculum and course improvement with continually updated teaching methods. Participate in subject or program leadership teams and college-wide committees. Work effectively in a team-based environment. Seek opportunities for continuous professional development.

Provide high quality customer service throughout all interactions. This includes but is not limited to: work effectively and positively with people from all backgrounds; help the customer find solutions; anticipating needs, and following up with the customer. Provide friendly, respectful, personalized experiences throughout every interaction.

Responsible for placing learning first and providing educational experiences for learners in accordance with the mission of the college inclusive of facilitating learning, assessing student performance, as well as instruction and outcomes, developing and maintaining current/relevant course materials and curriculum, working with high school dual credit teachers, and communicating with the community, other schools, the college, the division, and team members. Teaching/training in business and industry may be assigned.

This is a year-round position serving on average, 40 hours per week. During assigned instructional terms, or semesters, 60% of the week is designated for students contact time, or teaching, and 40% for professional expectations, as outlined below.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Other duties may be assigned):

(100%) Instruction

  • Deliver classroom, range, and over‑the‑road instruction that prepares students for CDL licensure.
  • Train students in required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections following industry and regulatory standards.
  • Provide hands‑on demonstrations of vehicle operation, safety procedures, and maneuvering techniques.
  • Evaluate student performance through observation, skills assessments, and documented progress checks.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment on the driving range, in the classroom, and during road training.
  • Ensure all instructional activities comply with Department of Transportation requirements and program policies.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records, attendance, training logs, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with students to support learning, skill development, and professional conduct.
  • Maintain all required professional licensures and certifications necessary for CDL instruction and vehicle operation.
  • Serve as a certified Third‑Party CDL Examiner, conducting skills testing in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Instruction/Manage the Learning Environment

  • Curriculum: Integrate learning theories and models into curriculum design. Update the curriculum appropriately in the curriculum design repository system and the college learning management system according to the college schedule and guidelines.
  • Delivery: Facilitate learning, utilizing a variety of delivery modes and learning theories. Encourage engagement of students while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and functioning environment.
  • Assessment: Evaluate student learning based on course competencies and program outcomes, employing formative and summative assessments. Provide constructive and timely feedback. Retain records through the college information system according to program requirements.
  • Support Dual Credit and Credit for Prior Learning activities.
  • There may be operational needs requiring substitutions of alternative duties and/or the creation of flexible delivery.

Enhance Student Success

  • Modify teaching and learning based on feedback and assessment results to improve student success.
  • Create an inclusive and equitable learning environment designed to address student needs and partner with accommodation or other support services to provide reasonable accommodations, when appropriate.
  • Advise students in ways that foster the development of the whole student, and encourage persistence and timely completion of a course, certificate, diploma, or degree.
  • Assess the effectiveness of a course and/or program and take necessary steps to enhance outcomes.

Pursue Professional Development

  • Participate in initial and ongoing required professional development. This includes but is not limited to, college-wide meetings, on-site professional development days, Wisconsin Technical College System Faculty Quality Assurance System FQAS courses, etc.
  • Develop and update annual goals as documented in the employee performance review.
  • Maintain required industry certifications and/or licensures.

Participate in Planning or College Advancement

  • Participate in division, department, and program meetings to improve program health.
  • Provide input into hiring, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Participate in college advancement initiatives, including college-wide teams, advisory committees, and/or statewide teams.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and reporting of grants.
  • Support the College accreditation process.
  • Participate in program planning, development, and modification.

Outreach

  • Participate in outreach, recruitment, and community events as determined by college leadership.
  • Collaborate with Workforce Solutions on scoping business and industry needs.

Other

  • Activities required to maintain program accreditation unless part of coordinator duties.
  • Grant writing and reporting activities may be required.
  • Activities required to maintain competency, partnerships, and mutual services within external/offsite locations.
  • Oversee and coordinate operations at external sites and satellite locations that maintain campus standards.
  • Additional instructional or instructional-related activities may be assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical Diploma in Truck Driving OR
  • High school diploma and successful completion of Truck Driver Train-the-Trainer course offered through WTCS (or equivalent school with proof of transcript). This course must be completed by the end of the first year of teaching.
  • Must possess and maintain a good driving record with DOT/DMV & CSA (Compliance Safety & Accountability).
  • Must have a minimum of seven years (14,000 hours) experience as a Truck driver.
  • In addition, one of the following must be met:
    • At least two years of driving experience must have occurred within the last five years.
    • Two years of teaching Truck driving course work at the post-secondary level within the last five years.
All instructors are required to meet and maintain Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements, Faculty Quality Assurance Standards (FQAS), and/or other job-specific licensing standards.

Per the subject area taught, instructors are required to possess the appropriate credentials.

Certifications, Licensure, Registration

  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • In addition, instructors must NOT have any of the following restrictions on their Class A CDL:
    • L (No full air brakes)
    • Z (No full air brakes)
    • O (No fifth-wheel connection)
  • Current driving record within acceptable standards of DOT (Department of Transportation) and Wisconsin DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) standard.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Utilize classroom technologies necessary for instruction, e.g., Interactive Whiteboard, SmartBoard, Projectors, Document Camera, and Lecture Capture equipment.
  • Use Worldwide Instructional Design System (WIDS) for curriculum development and access to course/syllabi information.
  • Must be innovative and able to collaborate with other staff in developing curriculum for instruction.
  • Must be well motivated and have a strong interest in contributing to the success of the College.
  • Positive human relations and effective written and oral communication skills are essential.

  • Work environment may require multi-tasking.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Condition(s) Of Employment

  • Employment conditional on completion of a Background Information Disclosure (BID) and a Motor Vehicle Record Check with the results acceptable to the College.
  • Valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license is required.
  • Must meet and maintain Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) requirements within 3 years of employment.
