The Athletic Trainer will work within the school system to provide specialized care to its athletic population. They will accept responsibility of creating and implementing evidence-based sports performance programs, provide care during community events and assist in cross coverage of affiliated schools or organizations as needed. The focus of the position will be the specialization of strength and conditioning of the athletes within the partnered schools and community. The ATC assumes responsibility to meet or exceed all established program indicators and assures that their actions are in a manner consistent with the vision, mission, and values of the organization.

Essential Functions

  • Develop plans for providing athletic training coverage at interscholastic athletic events and practices.
  • Establish and maintain a budget for athletic training supplies/equipment and carryout the bidding and ordering process with school personnel (e.g., athletic director, treasurer, etc.) as needed.
  • Establish the athletic training clinic operating hours.
  • Develop and do annual updates for a venue specific emergency action plan.
  • Develop an athletic training student-aid program if requested by the school and follow state guidelines and laws regarding athletic-training student-aides.
  • Establish a working relationship with the medical director, the school nurse, and other healthcare professionals within the community.
  • Complete LBJI Academy courses for the organization as assigned and any training required by the school.
  • Maintain thorough medical records on all injuries and rehabilitation procedures.
  • Comply with organizational policies, uphold the NATA code of ethics, stay up-to-date on best practices withing the profession of athletic training, and pursue continuing education in order to maintain credentials and to fill in weaknesses in professional practice.
  • Provide CPR/AED training to coaches as requested.
  • Attend and participate in monthly athletic training meetings and be willing to share ideas on how athletic trainers can continue to help the community.
  • Provide schools with services that meet the standards of the NATA Safe Sports School Award.

Required Skills

  • Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must possess knowledge on a large range of injuries and illnesses. Injury prevention, assessment and evaluation skills and working with a team of other healthcare professionals is paramount to successful patient care.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Have the ability to think critically, improvise and problem-solve at all points of patient interaction and when completing organizational/athletic training clinic managerial duties.
  • Attention to Detail: should be detail oriented and thorough in injury tracking and documentation.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must have the ability to communicate effectively with patients, medical professionals, and parents/guardians in high stress situations. Must be able to communicate effectively in written form as well.
  • Must have the ability to organize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Role Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • (Minimum Education Requirements): Bachelor’s degree in related field. (Preferred Education Requirements) - Master's Degree in related field; American Red Cross Instructor certification (must have this within a year of hire, but LBJI will assist with the process)
  • BOC certified.
  • Current Indiana state Athletic Training licensure, certification, or registration.
  • Hold a BLS CPR Certification from Americal Red Cross of American Heart Association

Physical Requirements

Work is medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum, but will lift 20 - 50 pound items regularly. Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to properly perform patient examination. Must be able to squat and kneel in order to do on-field patient examinations. Must be able to work in outdoor conditions.

Environmental/Working Conditions

Work is performed in a school training room, facilities, and sports venues Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare personnel. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. It is possible work may involve interaction with injured or sick patients. Some travel is required (e.g., traveling with the football team in the fall & travel to LBJI for periodic meetings)
