The Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women & Children Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum Doula will play a pivotal role is crafting personalized attention for families who are in their birth journey. As a vital member of the maternity care team, you will provide emotional reassurance, physical comfort, and evidence-based information to empower women and their families during one of the most transformative times in their lives. Your role is to create a nurturing environment, advocate for patient preferences, and ensure a positive birthing experience through personalized care and expert guidance at LRH. In addition to pregnancy, birth and postpartum support, you will support programs and events for families in the community with the maternity care navigation team. This role is more than a job; it’s a commitment to our community to elevate the standards of the birthing process and create a unique service that families will remember for years to come.

Standard Work: Birth & Postpartum Doula
  • Offer continuous emotional support and reassurance to birthing individuals before, during, and after labor
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Prenatal Education & Preparation: Skilled with intake procedures by gathering relevant health history and developing birth plan and preparing for delivery. Provide prenatal education to program participants regarding maternal health, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. Educate mothers on birth preparation, coping techniques, and childbirth expectations
  • Labor and Delivery Support: Provide educational, emotional and physical support to mothers during labor and childbirth when possible. Assist mothers in utilizing comfort techniques such as breathing exercises, positioning, and relaxation strategies. Advocate for mothers and help facilitate communication, patient preferences, respectful and individualized maternity care with healthcare providers when appropriate. Collaborate with nursing team in assessing labor progress and identify needs or concerns. Maintain a calm, supportive presence that fosters confidence and reduces anxiety throughout the birthing process
  • Postpartum Support: Provide postpartum education and follow-up to support maternal recovery and adjustment to caring for a newborn. Educate mothers on newborn care, maternal health, and postpartum wellness. Provide guidance on infant feeding and refer participants to lactation services when appropriate
  • Care Coordination: Collaborate with clinicians, case managers, and other program staff to support participant needs. Connect mothers with additional maternal health or community resources when needed
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate documentation of services provided to program participants. Ensure documentation complies with organizational and program standards. Performs such other duties as reasonably requested by or otherwise necessary to properly assist the operations of the Women’s Service Line (Ambulatory and Inpatient).

Competencies & Skills

Essential:

  • Strong commitment to patient experience with a compassionate and calm approach. Ability to provide emotional support and encouragement during labor and delivery
  • Compassionate demeanor with exceptional communication skills tailored for all populations of mothers.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology related to reproductive health, pregnancy, maternity care, labor, childbirth process and postpartum recovery
  • Organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment while thinking quickly and responding to multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to travel within the community and to healthcare facilities for prenatal visits and childbirth support
  • Ability to stand, sit or remain active for extended periods during labor support, education sessions and/or patient interviews
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participates, healthcare providers, and program staff
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials or supplies
  • Follow all organizational and unit specific standard operating procedures and policies
Nonessential:

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • High School or Equivalent

  • Associate Degree

- Able to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment.

- Ability to build trusting relationships with program participants.

Experience Preferred:

- Proven experience as a birth doula or training in childbirth education.

- Experience supporting pregnant women during pregnancy, labor, or postpartum periods preferred

- Experience working with vulnerable populations including women experiencing behavioral health or recovery challenges preferred.

- Experience providing prenatal education or childbirth preparation support

• Knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery.
