Position Summary


The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for carrying out the mission of Lakeland Regional Heath’s School-Based Athletic Training Program, which is to support the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries sustained by student-athletes at assigned institution(s) within Polk County. The Athletic Trainer will: practice within the parameters of the Florida Athletic Training Licensing Law as laid out by the Florida Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners, follow both the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics set forth by the Athletic Training Board of Certification; and practice within the scope of their licensure in accordance with the approved policies, procedures, and protocols set forth by the Program Administrator, Medical Director(s), Supervising Physician(s), School Athletic Director(s), and the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director. The Athletic Trainer’s duties are based on the needs of the assigned institution(s) and athletic programs, as well as identified programmatic needs established by Program Administration. The Athletic Trainer contributes to positive outcomes and meets the cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior. He/she shares responsibility for all aspects of the athletic training functions at assigned institution(s).



Position Responsibilities



Standard Work: Certified Athletic Trainer University Based
  • Oversees the medical care for student athletes under their direct supervision, including consultation with named team physicians.
  • Directs and provides comprehensive medical care (prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation services) for student athletes under their direct supervision, including but not limited to application of protective or injury preventive devices (tape, braces, etc.); initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care and to determine need for physician referral; training programs and routines designed to improve athletic performance; evaluation of athletes' readiness to play and associated participation clearances when necessary and warranted; accommodation recommendations, related to sport, for student athletes with restrictions or limitations.
  • Works collaboratively with team and community physicians, physician extenders, and the larger medical community to determine need for and promote timely access to medical and physical rehabilitation services, implementation of comprehensive rehabilitation services, and rapid safe return to sport.
  • Acts as consultant to and coordinates with the head athletic trainer and head coaches of assigned sports with regard to student-athlete physical well-being, including progress of recovering athletes.
  • Provides instruction on subject matter related to athletic training or sports medicine, including the instruction of coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel, and community members in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and flexibility to meet athlete, school and programmatic needs so that positive outcomes are achieved while maintain a high degree of productivity and efficiency.
  • Completes administrative duties, including maintaining all assigned student athlete-related documentation; assuring that all student-athletes have completed all pre-participation documents including physical examinations prior to practice and competition; Monitors the athletic insurance coverage for the student athletes in those sports under their supervision through the athletic secretary; Completes established injury and referral tracking logs as directed by the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director.
  • Performs team support duties including playing fields for assigned sports in order to locate any items that could injure players, as well as laundry, maintaining equipment, supply stocking and inventory management. Utilizes measures to promote and maintain patient, visitor, and staff safety, including the appropriate use of infection control principles and personal protection equipment.
  • Knows and adheres to all organizational and department policies and procedures, as well as those of the assigned school(s).

Essential:

  • Possesses knowledge about a large range of medical problems and associated assessment and evaluation techniques.
  • Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and team work skills.
  • Able to critically think and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Uses effective verbal and written communication skills; Able to effectively communicate in high stress / pressure situations when talking with athletes, patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.
  • Demonstrates good attention to detail and ability to complete and maintain thorough detailed injury tracking and documentation.
  • Demonstrates good time management and organization skills; Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to demonstrate flexibility for coverage, including travel between school(s), sport event locations, and facilities, including nights, weekends, and holidays/holiday breaks as needed, for both home and away events as able.

  • Bachelor Degree
Nonessential: Certificate of Completion

Accredited Program for Athletic Training


Other information:

Experience Essential:

  • Experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer (or Student Athletic Trainer) in a school-based athletic training setting.
  • Essential computer skills and knowledge of electronic medical records recommended; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Successful completion of mandatory requirements, including Department proficiencies / competencies.
  • Basic and continuously updated evidence-based knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, primary care medicine, preventative health maintenance, and emergency medical care.

Experience Preferred:

  • One to two years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a collegiate-level setting.

Certification Essential:

  • BOC Certification
  • Certified BLS (CPR and AED)

Licenses Essential:

  • Athletic Training Licensure or Eligibility for the State of Florida
