Position Summary
Responsible to the Histology Team Leader/and Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and works in a self-directed work team performing various procedures on tissue samples. Works closely with the Pathologists and is responsible to practice within the scope of their duties and licensure in accordance with approved policies, procedures and protocols. Follows all safety practices and maintains competency with skills to ensure high quality testing services. Must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient, customer, and employee satisfaction. Contributes to positive outcomes and meets the vision and cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and laboratory expertise.

Licenses Essential: Licensed as a Histotechnologist from the Florida Board of Clinical Lab Personnel (BCLP) under the State of Florida Department of Health division of Medical Quality Assurance.
Certifications Preferred: ASCP HTL Registry

- Standard Work Duties: Histology Technologist
- Actively participates in team development, achieving dashboards, and in accomplishing department goals and objectives
- Assists Pathologist/Pathologist Assistant with gross dissection and frozen section procedures as need
- Prepares microscopic slides, including special stains, IHC, of high quality for patient diagnosis following the correct protocols and procedures
- Follows established safety and biohazard procedures and standard precautions at all times. Disposes of biohazardous waste following laboratory protocols (see Laboratory Safety Manual and Chemical Hygiene Plan)
- Supports professional development by assisting with training and/or competency assessment for coworkers, new employees and students
- Manages and prioritizes the preparation and organization of specimens within the expected turnaround times
- Performs all preventative maintenance procedures, troubleshooting and documentation of corrective actions according to established policies and procedures; communicating issues to Supervisor
- Takes responsibility to seek, maintain and increase own knowledge, skills and abilities so that ongoing competency is maintained
- Performs cytology preparation when needed
- Participates in Laboratory Quality Assurance programs including proficiency testing
Essential:
- Experienced in cutting frozen sections and knowledgeable in a variety of special stains, including Immunohistochemistry
- Computer/key boarding skills appropriate to position for data entry and order entry. Demonstrates organizational and documentation skills
- Works independently with minimal supervision
Qualifications & Experience
- High School or Equivalent
- Associate Degree
- Certification from an accredited Histotechnology training program
- B.S. degree or equivalent in Histology with one year clinical internship from an approved training program
