Job Title: Medical Director – Opioid Treatment Program (Methadone Clinic) – Florida Position Summary

The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and medical oversight for a licensed Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) in Florida. This role ensures safe, effective, and compliant delivery of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including methadone, in accordance with federal guidelines and Florida Administrative Code Rule 65D-30 governing substance use disorder services.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Oversight

  • Perform and/or supervise comprehensive medical evaluations, including diagnosis of opioid use disorder (OUD).
  • Develop, review, and approve individualized treatment plans in coordination with counseling staff.
  • Oversee methadone induction, stabilization, and maintenance protocols.
  • Monitor patient progress, response to treatment, and adjust dosing as clinically appropriate.
  • Evaluate and manage patients with co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.

Regulatory Compliance (Florida-Specific)

  • Ensure compliance with:
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (42 CFR Part 8 – OTP regulations)
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (controlled substances regulations)
  • Florida Department of Children and Families (F.A.C. Rule 65D-30)
  • Maintain adherence to Florida OTP requirements, including:
  • Physician oversight of all methadone dosing decisions
  • Documentation of medical necessity and treatment justification
  • Compliance with take-home dosing criteria per federal and state rules
  • Participate in state inspections, audits, and accreditation reviews (e.g., CARF, Joint Commission).

Medication Management

  • Authorize all methadone dosing, including initial induction and dose adjustments.
  • Approve take-home privileges in accordance with stability criteria and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure protocols are in place to prevent diversion and ensure safe medication storage and dispensing.
  • Oversee toxicology testing and interpretation of results.

Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Provide supervision to medical staff (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses).
  • Collaborate with counselors, therapists, and program administrators in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Train staff on best practices in addiction medicine and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure staff adherence to clinic policies and clinical protocols.

Quality Assurance & Risk Management

  • Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and safety.
  • Review adverse events, incidents, and sentinel events.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant medical documentation.
  • Monitor program performance metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.

Administrative & Community Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary medical liaison with regulatory agencies and community partners.
  • Assist in policy development and program planning.
  • Support community outreach and education related to substance use disorder treatment.

QualificationsEducation & Licensure

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Active, unrestricted Florida medical license.
  • DEA registration for Schedule II controlled substances.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry, or a related specialty (preferred).

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, or related field.
  • Prior experience in an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Methadone treatment protocols and medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Federal OTP regulations (42 CFR Part 8)
  • Florida Administrative Code Rule 65D-30
  • Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication abilities.
  • Commitment to ethical, patient-centered, and stigma-free care.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient opioid treatment program setting.
  • Early morning hours may be required due to dosing schedules.
  • On-call responsibilities may be required for clinical suppo
