Varsity Softball Assistant Coach (Pitching Coach)
Reports To: Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach
Position Summary
The Varsity Softball Assistant Coach (Pitching Coach) is responsible for the development, instruction, and performance of the softball pitching staff while supporting all aspects of the varsity softball program. This position plays a critical role in helping student-athletes achieve excellence both on and off the field through skill development, character building, and adherence to the values and expectations of the athletic department.
The Assistant Coach will work collaboratively with the Head Softball Coach to promote a positive culture while fostering sportsmanship, accountability, and competitive excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Pitching Development
- Design and implement a comprehensive pitching development program for all pitchers within the softball program.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction focused on mechanics, velocity, movement, command, pitch selection, and mental preparation.
- Develop and monitor pitching workloads to promote performance and injury prevention.
- Analyze pitching performance and provide constructive feedback for continuous improvement.
- Assist in identifying and developing future pitching talent within the program.
Coaching Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Softball Coach in planning and conducting practices, conditioning sessions, and skill development activities.
- Support game preparation, scouting, strategy development, and in-game coaching decisions.
- Attend and actively participate in all scheduled practices, games, meetings, camps, and team events.
- Help supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and contests.
- Promote high standards of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility.
Program Development
- Support the overall vision, goals, and expectations established by the Head Softball Coach and Athletic Department.
- Assist with youth camps, clinics, and community outreach efforts to grow the softball program.
- Foster positive relationships with athletes, parents, school staff, officials, and community stakeholders.
- Contribute to creating a positive and inclusive team culture that prioritizes student-athlete development.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Adhere to all district, state association, conference, and school policies and procedures.
- Maintain required certifications and coaching credentials.
- Assist with equipment management, inventory, and facility upkeep.
- Complete all required paperwork, training, and compliance requirements in a timely manner.
Qualifications
- Previous softball coaching experience preferred, with demonstrated expertise in pitching instruction.
- Strong knowledge of softball pitching mechanics, strategy, and player development.
- Ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators.
- Commitment to developing student-athletes academically, athletically, and personally.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required for practices and competitions.
- Must meet all district and state requirements for coaching employment.
