Lake Whatcom Water & Sewer District, a special purpose government entity providing municipal water & sewer service in the Sudden Valley, Geneva, and North Shore areas, is recruiting for a Maintenance Worker I.

Maintenance Worker I is an entry level position that assists in maintenance and operation of the District’s water treatment and sewage collection systems. Work is done as part of an assigned crew, and technical skills, training, and certifications are incorporated into the first year of employment with a goal of promotion to Maintenance Worker II.

  • The Fixer: Troubleshooting and repairing complex machinery, from sewage pumps to water pressure reducing valves.
  • The Operator: Safely operating vacuum trucks, excavators, and specialized utility equipment.
  • The Technician: Monitoring water quality parameters, collecting samples, and keeping our treatment plants running.
  • The Protector: Responding to system emergencies, fixing main breaks, and ensuring our fire hydrants and infrastructure are always ready for action.

Required Qualifications:

  • Mechanical Aptitude or Experience: You have a proven track record of working with your hands. Whether your background is in construction, auto mechanics, plumbing, or facility maintenance, you know your way around a toolbox and understand how mechanical systems work.
  • Problem-Solver: You can look at a broken pump or a leaking pipe and figure out a logical way to fix it.
  • Physical Grit: You enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather, can lift heavy equipment, and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty.
  • Clean Driving Record: A valid driver's license is required, and we’ll support your effort to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License!

The District offers excellent benefits, including WA State PERS Retirement, health/dental/vision insurance, a voluntary deferred compensation program with District contribution after one year, and vacation and sick leave. The salary range is $34.98 to $48.80 per hour, DOQ. Incumbents in this position are subject to both after-hours call out and overtime. The position is represented by the AFSCME bargaining unit.
