Cleveland-Cliffs, Lake Superior & Ishpeming (LS&I) Railroad in Negaunee, MI has an immediate opportunity for a Carman. This role is responsible for contributing to the railroad Maintenance team by safely and efficiently performing maintenance, repair and modification of rail cars. Our ideal candidate will be accountable for safe & efficient work and operating practices, enjoys hard work, is self-driven, goal oriented and resilient. Most importantly, will demonstrate a safety conscious mindset. Summary of Responsibilities: Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Repairs, modifies, upgrades rail cars and rebuilds car components using hand/power tools, cutting torches, welding equipment, pneumatic tools, grinder and precision measuring instruments. Removal, fabrication, fitment and welding of railcar parts, components and structures. Performs mechanical labor, applies decals, stenciling and paint. Works around and operates forklift, overhead cranes and mobile equipment. Inspects machines and equipment. Reads and understands service repair manuals, blueprints, technical drawings and tape measure. General housekeeping of work areas. Develops and maintains positive and productive working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; demonstrates good communication skills, competence, good judgment, good work ethic, integrity, a positive attitude and character that inspires trust. Must be committed to safety and have the ability and willingness to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations. Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required. LS&I Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. Must be open to work any shift including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime and call-outs. Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: Minimum High School Diploma/GED required Basic computer skills Excellent reading and communication skills Mechanical aptitude and the ability to read precision gauges and instruments, blueprints, service manuals and technical drawings. Knowledge and experience with using hand/power tools, cutting torches, welding equipment, pneumatic tools, grinder and precision measuring instruments, operating forklift, overhead cranes and mobile equipment. Must have the ability to become and remain General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) qualified. TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Card) may be required after hire.
