What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Manager position at LAKE REGION HEALTHCARE CORPORATION?
The Lab Manager assists the Lab Director in organizing and assuring efficient function and successful operation of the laboratory. This includes oversight of satellite laboratories, including Elbow Lake Medical Center and its satellite sites. The Manager will assist with establishing the work procedures and priorities within imposed deadlines. This position assumes responsibility of the entire Laboratory when the Laboratory Director is absent. This role will also serve as the CLIA Lab Director in a moderately complex lab, as needed.
The Laboratory Manager position requires a highly trained, specialized individual who can work well under stressful situations. The Lab Manager works closely with the Pathologist, Laboratory Director, Lab staff, office staff, physicians, nursing and other personnel at both Fergus Falls and Elbow Lake facilities. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The incumbent has access to sensitive, confidential information and must be able to maintain those confidences.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide technical and operational leadership for laboratory services, including oversight of quality assurance, proficiency testing, accreditation readiness, regulatory compliance, and staff competency programs.
- Assist with laboratory management functions, including staffing, scheduling, policy implementation, information systems support, and acting on behalf of the Laboratory Director when needed.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory personnel, students, and interns; support ongoing staff development and performance improvement.
- Coordinate quality initiatives across multiple laboratory locations, including site visits, audits, accreditation preparation, competency assessments, and staff engagement activities.
- Perform and oversee a full range of clinical laboratory testing procedures across hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, transfusion medicine, and related disciplines.
- Collect, process, and document patient specimens; assist with specialized specimen collection procedures and ensure adherence to laboratory policies and quality standards.
- Participate in committees, inspections, and educational activities while promoting continuous improvement and regulatory compliance throughout laboratory operations.
- Serve as the CLIA Lab Director in a moderately complex lab, as needed.
Compensation
This is a salaried-exempt position with a pay range of $100,000-$115,500 annually. Please note that final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications and internal equity considerations.

- Education/Special Skills: A Bachelor of Science degree from an approved school including an internship under the direction of a Pathologist in an approved laboratory. Must possess an appropriate HHS approved certification (i.e. ASCP). Must maintain approved certification status.
- Must have a minimum of four years’ of experience as staff Medical Laboratory Scientist and a minimum of two years supervisory/administrative experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate lab equipment, such as centrifuge, microscope, analyzers, and computer keyboard/word processor equipment. Ability to follow detailed blood collection and lab procedures.
- Ability to research and develop new lab procedures as required by the Director of Laboratory Services. Maintain a comprehensive procedure manual, quality control program and acceptable proficiency survey results for section/s assigned or delegate to suitable person(s). Ability to problem solve/troubleshoot equipment. Ability to promote/maintain teamwork internally and externally. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Successful completion of the pre-employment health screening process required.
- Must be able to attend work site per schedule and available for consultation via telephone. Duties may require limited amount of nonscheduled overtime hours as workload requires. Duties may require change of shift to accommodate workload and/or labor supply shortage.
