Duties
- Safely operate school buses, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles according to established routes and schedules.
- Ensure passenger safety by following all transportation safety regulations and vehicle codes.
- Assist students with disabilities or those needing wheelchair assistance, providing respectful and compassionate support.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies with appropriate emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Communicate clearly with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using strong communication skills in English or multilingual as needed.
- Follow all traffic laws and school policies diligently to ensure safe arrival and departure at all destinations.
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement required; experience in school bus driving preferred, but will train.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations applicable at state and local levels.
- Experience working with children or in childcare environments is highly desirable.
- Certification in first aid and CPR is preferred; willingness to obtain if not already certified.
- Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes and emergency situations with calmness and professionalism.
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for diverse communities.
- Physical ability to perform heavy lifting and assist passengers as needed; comfortable with long periods of driving and standing.
- Familiarity with emergency stop procedures, vehicle maintenance basics, and transit bus operation is advantageous.
