What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker II - Forestry position at Lake Forest?
The City of Lake Forest is seeking a motivated, team-oriented Forestry Maintenance Worker to join our nine-person Forestry Section. Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Perform tree maintenance activities including tree and shrub identification, tree pruning, removals, planting, structural support, sidewalk clearing, and routine care.
- Conduct Plant Health Care (PHC) activities including identifying pest and disease, and assisting with treatment applications.
- Assist other Public Works sections through cross-training when needed.
- Participate in urban forestry management, including analysis, planning, and implementation of tree care strategies.
- Use technical rigging and problem-solving skills to safely complete complex tree removals.
- Climbing with the use of rope and saddle
- Maintain the City’s Tree Inventory using TreePlotter software.
- Operate high-quality forestry equipment including chippers, aerial lifts, stump grinders, log loaders, and more.
- Work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
- Participate in the City’s snow removal program.
- Work as part of a nine-person team with strong leadership support, professional development opportunities, and a positive, collaborative atmosphere.
- A passion for nature, the environment, and working outdoors.
- Preferred: Educational or hands-on background in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture, or related fields.
- Strong ability to accurately identify trees and shrubs in the region.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within the first six months (City covers exam costs and provides preparation support).
- Ability to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operator License within the first six months (training and exam support provided).
- ISA Certified Arborist is a plus; if not certified, the City will support your preparation and exam costs.
- Ability to work alternate schedules during winter operations, weekends, and when workload dictates.
- Ability to perform physical work in all weather conditions, including rain and snow.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $64,753 - $93,368 DOQ
