REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, SALARIED

 

 

Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position of Head Coach, Softball.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  • Serves as the primary recruiter for the softball program, identifying and evaluating potential students with that interest and organizing their recruitment in conjunction with the Office of Admission.

  • Scouts and evaluates potential recruits.

  • Assists in all phases of coaching for designated sport’s team.

  • Works closely with Advancement and the Director of Athletics on team fundraising efforts.

  • Follows all institutional and NCAA regulations regarding recruiting and operations of designated sport in particular and athletics in general.

  • Helps promote visibility and awareness of the designated sport’s program.

  • Handles equipment and team related laundry needs for the program.

  • Assists with athletes’ study hall coverage and coordination.

  • Assists with all game setups and operations.

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends and to travel for team practices and competition as well as recruiting.

  • Assists with transportation of team in vans or bus, upon approval.

  • Works with the Director of Athletics and the Director of Financial Aid for all scholarship-related matters. 

  • Manages the softball team’s social media accounts.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

  • Organizes, in conjunction with the Director of Athletics, all aspects of the softball program, including facility, game, practice and operational issues.

  • Makes budgetary suggestions regarding the proper operations and staffing of the areas of responsibility.

  • Enforces the Student Athlete Code of Conduct at the College.

  • Acts as a visible person to represent the College in a positive manner and to heighten the awareness of the institution to all of its constituents.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & KEY COMPETENCIES:

 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.

  • 3-5 years of experience as an assistant or a head coach at the collegiate level.

  • A valid driver’s license in good standing required.

  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, holidays.

  • CPR & First Aid Certification preferred.

  • Demonstrated skills in recruitment, instruction, practice/game plan development, fiscal management, staff supervision, general administrative duties, and an understanding of NCAA and G-MAC rules compliance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing tasks and responsibilities.

  • Strong demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to successfully build and manage relationships in a complex organization.

  • Demonstrated results leading and coaching a high-caliber sports program in a highly competitive, academic environment.

  • Ability to mentor and lead assistant coach by example and facilitate their professional development and growth.

  • Ability to work with a diverse community, including alumni and boosters.

  • Ability to delegate appropriately to assistant coaches.

  • Ability to work closely with athletic training staff and strength and conditioning coaches to facilitate prevention and recovery from injury of student-athletes.

  • Basic knowledge and ability to fundraise.

  • Creative, strategic, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor.

  • Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as across academic and administrative departments.

  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional conduct.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

 

  • Under the NCAA Bylaw 11.1.6 Sports-Safety Training, each head coach and all other coaches who are employed full time at an institution shall maintain current certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillator (AED) use.

  • All members of the department of athletics are responsible for knowing and following all institutional, Conference and NCAA regulations regarding recruiting and operations of the program. If regulations are not followed and result in a violation, employees are expected to self-report the violation to the compliance office or to the director of athletics. Additionally, employees must understand that those who knowingly violate, conceal, or attempt to cover up violations of NCAA rules shall be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
