Position Title: Elementary Classroom Paraprofessional
Reports To: Building Principal and Assigned Classroom Teacher (7.0 hours)
Position Summary
The Elementary Classroom Paraprofessional assists certified teachers in providing instructional, behavioral, and supervisory support to students in an elementary school setting. The paraprofessional works under the direction of the classroom teacher to promote student learning, foster positive relationships, and help maintain a safe and productive educational environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Support
- Assist teachers in implementing instructional activities and lessons.
- Work with individual students and small groups to reinforce learning concepts and skills.
- Provide academic support in reading, writing, mathematics, and other subject areas as directed.
- Assist students in completing assignments and classroom activities.
- Support differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.
Student Support
- Encourage positive student behavior and reinforce classroom expectations.
- Assist students with organizational skills, study habits, and task completion.
- Support students with special learning, social, emotional, or behavioral needs as directed.
- Foster student independence, responsibility, and self-confidence.
Classroom Management
- Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive classroom environment.
- Monitor student behavior and provide supervision during classroom activities.
- Support transitions between activities and throughout the school day.
- Assist with classroom routines and procedures.
Preparation and Organization
- Prepare instructional materials, learning centers, and classroom resources.
- Assist with grading, filing, copying, and organizing materials.
- Maintain classroom supplies and equipment.
- Help display student work and instructional materials.
Supervision Duties
- Supervise students during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other assigned activities.
- Ensure student safety in all assigned settings.
- Report concerns regarding student welfare to appropriate staff.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work cooperatively with teachers, specialists, administrators, and support staff.
- Participate in meetings and professional development as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.
- Communicate observations regarding student progress and behavior to the classroom teacher.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Meet Nebraska paraprofessional requirements and any district-specific qualifications.
- Ability to work effectively with children and adults.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Preferred
- Associate degree or college coursework in education or a related field.
- Previous experience working with elementary-aged students.
- Knowledge of child development and instructional practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
