Principal Juvenile Counselor (Juvenile Detention Officer) - Second Shift

Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in the field of community corrections with juvenile offenders.  Professionals in this class counsel, supervise, process, record, evaluate and make recommendations on all incoming referrals and/or juveniles held in detention.


The position requires shift work consisting of working weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and overtime.
  • All duties as delineated in the Senior Juvenile Counselor Job Description apply.
  • Functions as shift lead.
  • Assigns team members to pods.
  • Influences the work of others by acting as a lead worker, shift leader or by performing specialized duties. 
  • May provide back-up duties to staff or supervisors in their absence. 
  • Assists in the operation of the division in current and ongoing projects. 
  • Works with management to help improve policies, procedures, and standards. 
  • Forms productive and constructive relationships with clients, judiciary, staff, management, and ancillary agencies.
  • Assists staff when Unit Manager is unavailable.

May be responsible for:

  • Training team members
  • Training and working in Central Control
  • Coordinating training/mentoring/coaching
  • Completing intakes

  • Manages multiple priorities.
  • Recognizes and diagnoses problems and demonstrates competent problem-solving and decision-making skills on a continuing basis.
  • Demonstrates a continuing awareness of system issues and needs and brings them to the attention of management.
  • Demonstrates competent written and verbal communications.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements 

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferably with major course work in criminal justice, law enforcement, sociology, psychology, or related field. 
  • Certification from the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts. Link: Employment | Probation/Court Services
  • Minimum of 5 years working in probation, criminal justice, or social service field preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be a resident of Illinois.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a background check.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to restrain juveniles once properly trained.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • May involve long periods sitting and driving in a car.
