What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Enforcement/Building Inspector position at Lake County?

Under the general direction of the Code Enforcement Manager and the Building official, this person investigates and inspects properties for compliance with property maintenance, zoning, and building codes. The inspector will also conduct building inspections as needed for projects involving new construction, remodeling, or various home improvements. The inspector is responsible for analyzing detailed information and reporting findings of investigations and inspections.  

  • Investigate property maintenance, zoning, and/or building code violations. 
  • Confer with and provides information to property owners and others regarding code requirements and County policies and procedures wherever possible, resolves complaints and problems. 
  • Perform onsite inspections as required to identify code violations and/or property maintenance violations and take appropriate action.
  • Inspect residential projects as needed to verify compliance with applicable building codes.  
  • Document and maintain accurate records of inspections, actions taken and regulatory efforts; prepare written reports and correspondence and issue notices to correct code violations. 
  • Collect and maintain documentary evidence regarding non-compliant cases for use in court; testify in court and/or adjudication hearings as required. 
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the Property Maintenance Code, Building Code with Lake County amendments, Zoning Ordinance, and code enforcement methods and update code knowledge through regular training sessions. 
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Enforcement Administration customer service by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a team. 
  • The ability to work closely and communicate in a professional manner with the public, our municipal partners and co-workers.
  • Willingness and ability to be a problem solver.
  • Ability to obtain the International Code Council (ICC) property maintenance code certification within first year of employment.
  • Ability to work both individually and in a team atmosphere.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of technology such as: Microsoft Office products, permit management software, computer, I-Pad and I-Phone preferred.

Education and/or Other Requirements:

  • Degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or related area of study or high school diploma/GED and completed specialized vocational and/or technical courses along with four years of experience in the area of general building construction, building inspection, or code enforcement.
  • Hold an International Code Council (ICC) property maintenance code certification or be able to obtain property maintenance code certification within twelve (12) months of date hired, OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that imparts the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Requires a satisfactory driving record
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug and alcohol screening and pre-employment medical exam.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to spend extended periods of time sitting, standing or walking, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis and high dexterity in operating office equipment such as keyboard, phone, etc.
