Job Title: Nurse

Reports To: Public Health Director
Classification: On Call, Nurse Non-Exempt (hours will vary)
Compensation Range: $30 - $35 hourly

Position Summary
Lake County Public Health Agency (LCPHA), an EOE employer, seeks on-call Public Health Nurses. This position will provide a variety of public health nursing services including assessments and education to ensure the health and welfare of Lake County families and communities.  The schedule is on-call/variable and flexible depending on the current needs of the department.

This person will provide nursing services to support the immunization program, blood lead program, communicable disease investigations, and general clinical needs of Lake County Public Health Agency. This is a hands-on position with a lot of client interaction. This position will report to the Director and Deputy Director of Lake County Public Health and Environment.
This position is funded by Lake County, State of Colorado, and Federal funds. If the funding is reduced or discontinued, this position may be reduced or discontinued.


General Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions
  • Advocates for clients and families while providing public health nursing to assure the availability and accessibility of health care services.
  • Provides clinic services including immunizations, screenings, and blood lead testing.
  • Provide infection prevention guidance to the public.
  • Screens and Immunizes clients through life span.
  • Performs blood lead screening, follow up, and prevention education in accordance with State regulations.
  • Comply with State and National Standards of Immunization competencies.
  • Perform communicable disease surveillance and education in coordination with state epidemiologists.
  • Provides case management for Tuberculosis clients when necessary.
  • Manage communicable disease outbreaks in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend that changes be made when necessary to improve the effectiveness, efficiency or safety of basic operations.
  • Fill out and track all appropriate paperwork and documentation, including patient records, nursing logs and other reports.
  • Comply with all medical safety and legal requirements that are mandated by the hospital, clinic, city, state, and nation.
  • Keep patient confidentiality in accordance with health care regulations
  • Provide case management for children with special needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and required.
  • Support the reputation of the public health sector by keeping an open mind to changes and modifications in various nursing policies and procedures.

Requirements
Compensation will be determined by the applicant’s full skillset with consideration of the following:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Associate Degree in Nursing with a bachelor’s degree in a related field will be considered. Associate Degree in Nursing with public health nursing experience or 5 years of general nursing experience will also be considered.
  • Must be a licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in CO.
  • Previous experience with program management preferred.
  • Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Public contact experience in a service-related field with the ability to remain flexible and sensitive to a clientele diverse in age, ethnicity, and maturity.
  • Ability to work as part of a team. Effectively communicate and work with co-workers, clients, other agencies, and the public. 
  • Ability to assess situations and make prudent and appropriate decisions; ability to apply conflict resolution and problems solving skills to minimize negative personal impact.
  • Ability to efficiently plan, schedule, with strong organizational skills, with keen attention to detail and ability to complete quality work amidst multiple, competing priorities.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Preferred proficient in English and Spanish.

Public Health Nurses may encounter communicable diseases, bodily fluids, biohazards, or contaminated environments, particularly during vaccination clinics, disease surveillance activities, and shelter operations. 

Physical Activity & Work Environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Prolonged periods of standing or walking. 
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, or climbing. 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds  
  • Occasionally pushing, pulling, or moving objects. 
  • Use of hands for repetitive motions such as typing, writing, or operating equipment. 
  • Operation of standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, etc.). 
  • Ability to read and produce accurate documents and materials. 
  • Hearing ability sufficient to respond to spoken communication. 
  • Ability to climb stairs. 
  • Standard office environment with controlled temperature and lighting. 
  • Exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions. 
  • Interaction with the public, often in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations.

Notice of Emergency/Disaster Responsibilities

All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
