Job title: Hockey Referee

Department: Parks, Recreation, and Open Space

Reports to: Recreation Manager

Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Compensation: $23.31-$30.31 hourly

Position Summary

The hockey referee is responsible for knowing and enforcing the rules and regulations of hockey. Their primary responsibilities include enforcing rules of the game, making major calls, and ensuring the overall flow of play. The referee has the authority to assess penalties, award goals, and make decisions on plays.

General Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Perform pre, during, and post-game duties.
  • Ability to communicate quickly and effectively
  • Ability to manage a safe playing space, including but not limited to:
    • The control of rowdy players and spectators
    • Management of the facility and playing space
    • Quick and sound decision making
  • Ability to be authoritative but respectful in controlling the games
  • Responsible for starting games on time
  • Ensure the rink is free of debris before starting play
  • Enforce all rules in an impartial and professional manner
  • Responsible for keeping games safe and in control
  • Must check player equipment every game to ensure safety and legality of participants
  • Write incident reports
  • Notify Recreation Manager of any incidents
  • Any other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must have knowledge of the skills required for officiating hockey
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (training available)
  • Certification from a local or national training program is preferred
  • Available to work evenings December-February

Physical Activity & Work Environment

  • Must be able to conduct activities, standing, walking, running, and sitting
  • Conduct activities involving climbing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crawling, and reaching on a moderate basis
  • Work in a high-altitude environment
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to see close up and far away, with or without glasses or contacts
  • Must be able to conduct activities skating, standing, walking, and sitting
  • Conduct activities involving climbing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crawling, and reaching on a moderate basis
  • Ability to work in harsh weather conditions during winter months, including low temperatures, snow, and ice.

Notice Of Emergency/Disaster Responsibilities

All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
