Job Summary
The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary flooring throughout the nursing facility. This role plays a critical part in infection prevention and resident safety by ensuring all floor surfaces are properly cleaned, disinfected, and maintained according to healthcare standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain all floor surfaces, including vinyl, tile, carpet, and specialty healthcare flooring
- Strip, wax, seal, buff, and burnish floors to maintain a safe and polished appearance
- Perform carpet care including vacuuming, spot cleaning, shampooing, and extraction
- Follow strict infection control protocols when cleaning resident rooms, common areas, and clinical spaces
- Use appropriate disinfectants and cleaning solutions in accordance with CDC, OSHA, and facility guidelines
- Safely operate and maintain floor care equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, and extractors
- Immediately clean spills and hazards to prevent slips, falls, and cross-contamination
- Place proper signage (e.g., wet floor signs) to ensure resident, visitor, and staff safety
- Dispose of waste and soiled materials following healthcare regulations
- Assist housekeeping staff with general cleaning duties as needed
- Report flooring damage, safety hazards, or maintenance needs to supervisor
- Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure proper storage of chemicals
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous floor care or housekeeping experience in a healthcare setting preferred
- Knowledge of infection control practices and proper chemical use
- Ability to operate industrial floor care equipment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety
- Ability to interact respectfully with elderly residents, families, and staff
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move continuously throughout the shift
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Push and maneuver heavy floor equipment
- Ability to work in environments with cleaning chemicals and bodily fluids
Work Environment
- Skilled nursing or long-term care facility
- Frequent interaction with elderly or medically fragile residents
- Exposure to healthcare environments, including potential biohazards
- May require evenings, weekends, and holidays
Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to HIPAA privacy standards when working in resident areas
- Follow OSHA safety regulations and facility infection control policies
- Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
