Program Description: The Career and Professional Programs at LaGuardia Community
College is seeking a part-time Instructor to teach Healthcare Accounting and Revenue Cycle
for the grant-based Healthcare Finance and Operations Training Program (formerly known as
Medical Billing Specialist program). This program is designed to prepare students with little
or no healthcare experience to obtain entry level positions at revenue cycle, finance, operations
and other departments within the healthcare industry.
The program has 325 hours of training over a six-month period, containing seven modules that
include Introduction to the US Healthcare System, Medical Billing & EHR Training, Business
Communication & Customer Service, virtual operations, Intro to Excel, Advanced Healthcare
Data Analysis, Healthcare Accounting and Revenue Cycle Management, and Career and Job
Readiness. In this particular module, students will acquire skills to apply excel data analysis
functions to data reasoning, error vigilance, presentation, and decision sense in the context of
healthcare finance and operations.
General description of duties and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the instructor will be responsible for delivering
Healthcare Data Analysis module to diverse adult learners. The instructor will utilize personal
work experience, accomplishments, and academic training to enrich course curricula. The
instructor will utilize traditional and state of the art delivery methods. They will require to
deliver a few classes on-line using web technology in real time and asynchronous. Following
guideline, they will revise curriculum, develop instructional plans and materials; use and
incorporates prescribed materials as requested. Conducts classes as dictated by the program.
The program aims to review its data analysis module to strengthen the integration of higher-
order thinking—analysis, evaluation, synthesis, metacognition—into the curriculum.
Additionally, the Excel module will be merged with the Healthcare Data Analysis to serve as
a foundational component for healthcare data. A unifying dataset family will be developed to
support synthesis of learning across foundational to advanced analysis, and guided AI literacy
practices will be embedded throughout. In accordance of the existing high-level guidelines, the
selected expert will be responsible for revamping the Healthcare Data Analysis module. The
instructor will:
- Review and marge existing Excel module into Healthcare Data Analysis; * Revise Healthcare Data Analysis module in light of the existing guideline.
- develop a unified dataset family.
- develop lesson plans for all sessions and deliver engaging and interactive training;
- with the concurrence of the supervisor, modifies instructional plans and approaches in
response to feedback;
- ensure course and program learning outcomes are achieved as defined by the course
syllabus and program expectation;
- comply with program deadlines; evaluate student progress, submit grades; maintain
updated records of student's attendance and progress.
Other duties:
- Specifies equipment and support needs well in advance; confirms schedules, room
assignments;
- Assumes responsibility for managing the instructional session and responds in a
professional manner to any student needs/requests;
- Secures equipment at the end of a session consistent with department policy and/or notifies
responsible personnel;
- Makes learning materials available to students well advance;
- Offers availability for office hours and meetings;
- Collects session evaluations using established formats;
- Reports problems on a timely basis;
- Participates in sessions to generate ideas for program improvements and attends meetings;
- Promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among participants;
- Submits course outlines and samples in advance to the program when asked;
- Debriefs the program manager and/or sponsor following completion of a program;
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of experience in healthcare revenue management;
- Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare or Finance or a related field;
- Ability to create and modify curriculum, and develop lesson plans integrating work and
professional expertise in healthcare data analysis;
- Ability to integrate new theories, concepts, practices, inventions, or techniques relevant
to the healthcare data;
- Ability to use effectively basic interactions, role-plays, simulations, and group
processes, handling routine class situations with professional skill and ease;
- Ability to respond effectively to feedback and adjust teaching strategies and materials
in order to motivate students and to respond to student needs;
- Ability to deliver instruction effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to utilize web-based technology when appropriate for responding to
participant questions, providing coaching, teaching on line, etc.
- Ability to listen and respond effectively to sponsor concerns and interests;
- Ability to serve the needs of traditional and non-traditional students; ability to resolve
classroom conflicts;
- Appreciation of the diversity and varying learning styles of adult participants;
- Ability to allocate additional time outside of class for preparation, grading, and other related tasks;
- Must be available to attend program and instructional orientation sessions, which may require a commitment of up to 2 hours, prior to the start of the training program;
