Overview
The Shelter Security Staff member plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, order, and dignified environment of the Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM) Emergency Shelter. This position serves as the first point of contact for guests, requiring strong interpersonal skills, and a deep commitment to our mission. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a secure and clean facility by monitoring guest activity, enforcing shelter rules with fairness and respect, and responding calmly and effectively to any incidents or emergencies. (Available to work shifts from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am, 12:00 am to 7:00 am, and 5:00 am to 7:00 am.)
Responsibilities
Shelter Security and Administration
- Act as a leader and provide clear, strong instructions for clients and volunteers.
- Maintain safety of guests, volunteers and premises
- Assigns nightly tasks to volunteers
- Ensures all guests comply with LUM’s Shelter Rules for Guests
- Monitors and authorizes arrival/departure
- Performs a no-hands security check of all arriving guests
- Circulates among guests and monitors activity within the Shelter
- Walks and discourages loitering within three blocks of Shelter and on Lafayette Urban Ministry grounds
- In the event that guests violate Shelter Rules, suspends guest from access to Shelter and documents
- Writes reports of daily activities and daily attendance, noting any irregularities, such as the presence of unauthorized persons, inappropriate behavior, or unusual occurrences
- In the event of an emergency (such as threat of physical harm, an intruder, or fire) calls police
- Works closely with staff and volunteers to maintain a team environment modeling mutual respect and maintaining a professional and safe environment for Shelter guests.
- No viewing of online entertainment while on duty
- No deleting of history, cookies, or temporary internet files from LUM’s computer
- Must come to work in person
- Must stay awake for the duration of assigned shift
Cleaning ResponsibilitiesShelter security staff members are responsible for assigning the following jobs to guests and volunteers. Any jobs not done, or done well, are the responsibility of the shelter security staff member to complete. Jobs must be completed daily.
- Sweep, mop, and dust office
- Wash, dry, and fold laundry
- Sweep and mop laundry room and ensure laundry room is kept organized
- Sweep, mop, and dust volunteer room and volunteer bathroom nightly
- Clean toilet, wipe down shower and counter in volunteer bathroom
- Clean out fridge nightly and ensure kitchen is kept clean and organized
- Sweep and mop kitchen, wipe kitchen counters down, wipe stove down
- Sweep and mop dining hall, wipe dining tables down
- Sweep and mop men’s bathroom, wipe down counters and mirrors, clean out showers, clean toilets
- Sweep and mop women’s bathroom, wipe down counters and mirrors, clean showers, clean toilets
- Sweep and mop each guest room, wipe each bed down with bleach solution, clean bedroom windows, and dust
- Sweep and mop stairs, including basement stairs, and wipe down stair railing
- Sweep and mop basement and wipe down basement beds with bleach solution
- Pick up trash outside of building, sweep porch
- Clean mop closet and mop buckets out after each use
Other Duties
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Available to work shifts from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am, 12:00 am to 7:00 am, and 5:00 am to 7:00 am.
- Have a strong faith dynamic as expressed by a willingness to accept and support LUM’s Mission Statement.
- Commitment to self-determination of the poor.
- Minimum a High School Diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree in human services, social work or related fields is appreciated!
- Valid Driver’s License preferred.
- 1 year of experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work cooperatively with diverse people and groups (church, secular, public, private, low-income)
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Climb and descend multiple flights of stairs a minimum of 10 times per shift.
- Routinely lift and carry bags of laundry, supplies, or furniture weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Walk and stand for up to 2 hours per shift while monitoring the shelter, and performing security checks.
- Withstand high noise levels.
- Constantly bend, stoop, and kneel to perform tasks such as cleaning toilets, mopping floors, wiping down beds with bleach solution, and cleaning out showers.
- Possess the physical ability to respond quickly to emergencies, which may include moving rapidly through crowded spaces to de-escalate a situation.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.50 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 4 per week
