What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cashier position at Labriola's Italian Market?
Job Summary
Make a difference at a family-run business! Labriola's started 92 years ago on Larimer Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA. Now it's grown to four stores serving the Pittsburgh suburbs, and is recognized annually as one of the best grocery stores in the Pittsburgh area.
You will be working at the checkout counters and being a general purpose helper with other tasks around the store.
Cashier Duties at Labriola’s
- Greet Customers
- One Cashier should be at the front at all times in order to greet
customers when they arrive. This also helps with safety in the
store
- Check Out
- Be familiar with use of IT retail system for checking out, adding
product, monitoring prices. Watch each product as it’s checked out
to make sure correct product name and price are scanned
- Stay focused during customer check outs. Do not talk to other
employees or answer the phone when you are checking out. Pay
attention to the check out watch that it is done correctly.
- Collect Payment
- Be familiar with different types of payment including gift cards.
- Cash will be counted at the end of each day by designated staff
- Bag
- Bag the groceries for customers. Offer to carry out larger orders
for each customer
- Fill Online Orders
- Check iPad or Fax for online orders. Prep and fill the orders.
Monitor that orders are picked up. Call customer support or notify
manager if orders aren’t picked up in timely manner. Make sure that
no order is left at end of the day. Customer support number and
emails are posted by each register. Be familiar with where these
are in order to call if needed.
- Do not drive orders to customer’s houses - you are not insured to
do that.
- Answer Phone
- If you are able, help by answering the phone. We prefer that you do
not answer the phone when you are actively waiting on a customer.
- Take Phone Orders
- If you take an order, please use the order sheets when possible.
For all orders, make sure to write down the customer name and
number at top of page.
- WRITE YOUR NAME ON ALL ORDERS IN CASE THERE ARE QUESTIONS- At holiday time and for all large orders, customers should leave a
credit card number at the time of order. Inform them that they may
be charged at time of the order. (Some order the price may change
depending on the final weight and cannot be pre-charged). Check
with managers for any price question. Inform manager of any bread
order
- Straighten shelves
- During slow times, walk around the area and straighten the shelves.
First pull down any product that’s on the top shelf, then pull
product toward the front. Keep product in same sections by the
product label. Open up all cases. Remove the box or packing when
possible. Make new product labels with correct price if necessary
- Product Knowledge
- Be familiar with the products that we sell and their prices in
order to help answer customer questions. We’ll be posting
information and resources on this in the future
- Clean up Cashier Station
- Make sure to clean the cashier station each day this include
cleaning out breadcrumbs from underneath the scale to protect the
computer
- Make sure that if that space heater is used, it’s not near the
computer and that it is turned off at the end of the day
- Sweep around registers and at the front of the store
- Replace supplies
- Return used shopping carts and baskets. Check outside for any
carts. Wipe down or clean handles of carts if needed.
- Notify manager if any supply is running low including register
tape, bags, change, etc
- Check iPad email
- Check iPad email for any communications from other stores,
customers or managers
- Use work email for any correspondence with customers
Qualifications
- Prior experience in retail sales or cashiering preferred; grocery store experience is a plus
- Strong proficiency with POS systems and basic math skills for accurate cash handling
- Excellent communication skills; bilingual abilities are highly valued to serve diverse customer bases
- Demonstrated customer service skills with a positive attitude and professional phone etiquette
- Experience in supervising or leading team members is desirable but not required
- Ability to perform merchandising, stocking, and retail math tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of retail sales transactions, upselling techniques, and product demos to boost sales performance
Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
