Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE
Oversees all aspect of staff training for assigned team(s). Provide technical expertise and enhance the growth of the laboratory through areas of staff development and training personnel in day-to-day operations.
Essential Functions
- Ensures adequate staffing schedules for department specific assignments to meet demands of priority processing and required turnaround times. Plans for section-specific assignment schedules and posts schedules in advance. Approves changes to the schedule and communicates changes to appropriate individuals. Monitors employee performance and holds staff accountable for accurate and timely completion of assigned activities. Directs staff, as needed, to adjust job activities and work volume. Mentors staff and participates in employee evaluations and staff competency. Assists in the mediation or diffusion of any personnel conflicts. Promptly discusses any personnel issues with appropriate leadership. Promotes a positive employee engagement environment. Participates in regular feedback, communicating concerns, and supporting the implementation of improvement initiatives.
- Oversees department specific functions to ensure operations are running optimally. Maintains efficient operations to ensure prompt specimen handling and department turn-around times are met. Has accountability for shift clean up. Monitors daily checklists for completion of all pending tasks. Coordinates and communicates information between designated shifts and with staff and area leadership. Assumes responsibility for communicating policies and procedures, including safety, security, and customer service protocols.
- Performs troubleshooting as needed. Follows up with written documentation when necessary and makes suggestions to department leadership for corrective action. Defines priorities during extraordinary situations, such as sick calls, scheduled and unscheduled down time, and emergency "disaster" situations. Assists technologists in the pre-analytical processing of clinical trial study specimens. Develops and maintains procedure manuals, check lists, training records/competency and job aides. Has responsibility for the annual review of all documents.
- Assesses work processes and makes suggestions to supervisor for improved work methods and ways to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and solve operational problems. Works with leadership team and laboratory staff to plan for and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Monitors and ensures the department meets technical and regulatory compliance standards for New York State and any other regulatory agencies inspecting laboratory section. Monitors staff compliance. Participates in Quality Assurance initiatives and data collection for required monitors.
Minimum Education & Experience
- Associate's degree and 2 years of lab experience required or
- 3 years of Lab Science experience and technical training required
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrates excellent communication (i.e. verbal, written) and organizational skills, and effective interpersonal skills required
- Ability to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks, as well as ability to function effectively in a rapidly changing environment and navigate frequent interruptions required
- Participation in continuing education required
- Ability to maintain professional discretion with confidential patient results required
- Ability to identify and resolve problems required
