Description:
The Clinic Prior Authorization Clerk is responsible for obtaining, tracking, and documenting prior authorizations for diagnostic tests, medications, procedures, and specialty referrals for Labette Health clinic patients. This position works closely with providers, clinic staff, insurance payors, and patients to ensure timely approvals, minimize delays in care, and support accurate reimbursement.
The clerk must demonstrate strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple authorization requests simultaneously while maintaining a high level of customer service and professionalism.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Submit and follow up on prior authorization requests for imaging, labs, medications, procedures, and outside referrals.
Verify patient coverage and benefits; identify payor requirements to ensure accurate and complete submissions.
Communicate promptly with providers regarding documentation or clinical information needed for authorization.
Track authorization status, monitor expiration dates, and maintain accurate documentation in the EHR.
Notify providers and patients of authorization outcomes, including denials and required next steps.
Collaborate with billing and coding teams to resolve authorization-related claim issues.
Serve as a resource for clinic staff and providers regarding authorization processes and insurance requirements.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all Labette Health policies and procedures.
Provide excellent customer service to patients, providers, and external partners.
Perform other duties as assigned to support efficient clinic operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Prior experience in a medical office, billing, coding, or insurance environment preferred.
Strong knowledge of insurance payors, coverage guidelines, and authorization processes preferred.
Proficiency with EHR systems, insurance portals, and Microsoft Office.
Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
