COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION The counselor supports students in developing their academic and social skills to succeed both on and off campus. Students are guided through the necessary steps to be competitive toward their postsecondary goals and build the foundation for a successful and productive life. This position is under the supervision of the Vice President of Counseling Operations. The role of the counselor includes duties and responsibilities in the following areas: Academic ? Counsel students on their course selection, develop a four-year plan, and monitor student academic progress. ? Conference with teachers, parents, and students to implement academic plans to ensure students are on track for graduation and competitive toward their post-high school goals. ? Meet with students earning a C- or below to identify areas for support and refer students for appropriate assistance. ? Resolve any academic issues under the approval of the Assistant Principal and VP of Counseling Operations. ? Submit postings for the Parent Newsletter, Parent Weekly Bulletin, and Be in the Know (a counselor resource publication). ? Gather college matriculation data from seniors for the graduation program. ? Teach one Mentor class, an enrichment period for all students. The course covers a variety of topics, including instilling school values, community building, social-emotional learning, life skills, college and career planning, and more. College and Career ? Counsel students one-on-one to explore postsecondary options aligned with their interests and goals. ? Provide college counseling, scholarship, financial aid, and career information. ? Assist students in building a well-balanced and best-fit college list of safety, target, and reach schools. ? Guide students in developing their college essays through brainstorming, drafting, and proofreading until the final version. ? Help students write a detailed resume for college admission or a job application. ?
