Job Summary:
The Interpreter’s role is to facilitate cross-cultural communication in the Health Center. Provides consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages. A health interpreter translates information between patients who speak limited English and health care providers. They interpret a patient's symptoms and medical history as well as questions from health care providers. A health interpreter also conveys diagnoses and treatment instructions in a culturally appropriate manner.

- Facilitates cross cultural communication; relays concepts, diagnosis, and medical questions in a quick and accurate manner for non-English speaking patients of all ages.
- Provide language interpretation as Spanish speaking patients interface with non-Spanish speakers.
- Provide written translation services.
- Follow-up with patients which may include making phone calls and documentation.
- Adjusts workload to handle priority needs and requests.

Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Computer proficiency with outlook, word, excel required.
- Familiarity with scanner operation preferred.
Language Skills:
Bilingual English/Spanish, English/French Creole

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of computers, scanners.
- Knowledge of clinic medical chart forms and the filing process
- HIPPA regulations and compliance.
Skills:
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
- Fluency in two languages
- Good customer service skills.
- Attention to detail.
Abilities:
- Ability to stay organized.
- Ability to manage time and work independently.
- Ability to adjust to flexible schedule.
Operated:
Wide range of standard office equipment. Computer use and proficiency required.
Work Environment:
Standard offices in Health Center. Controlled lighting, air quality, and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
Mental/Physical Requirements:
Involves standing, walking, kneeling, bending, grasping, manipulating and squatting and lifting (up to 50 pounds). Walking or standing may be more than two (2) hours per day. Must be able to work in a standard medical office setting including use of a computer, and standard office equipment. Must have ability to read computer screens, printed materials and hearing and speech to communicate in person as well as over the phone. Must be able to attend meetings at various sites when required. Stress can be triggered by workload.
