Job Description
The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant collects patient specimens, prepares samples for testing, and enters required information into the Laboratory Information System. This role also supports reference lab testing, provides reports and information as needed, and performs assigned Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
Responsibilities Include
- Performing venipuncture and collecting patient and occasional employee blood samples in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Conducting waived and Point-of-Care (POC) testing, entering and verifying results in the LIS.
- Processing inpatient and outpatient lab orders, collecting specimens, and ensuring accurate documentation.
- Preparing, packaging, and sending specimens to reference laboratories, and scanning results into the appropriate systems.
- Providing professional customer service to patients, families, physicians, and departments.
- Assisting with inventory and general clerical duties.
- Maintaining up-to-date phlebotomy skills, equipment knowledge, and safety practices.
- Obtaining additional non-blood specimens (e.g., throat, nasopharyngeal, urine) as needed.
- Remaining proficient in laboratory systems such as Athena, 4Medica, and Meditech.
- Education: High school diploma and an approved phlebotomy program or 4-5 years relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Related Work Experience: 2 years previous pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: PBT(ASCP) and/or CLPIB (NCA) programs MA certification- preferred.
- Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- General knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and practices.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to provide compassionate patient care and orientation.
- Computer and office experience is preferred but not required.
- CPR required: Only certifications issued by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross will be accepted.
