POSITION SUMMARY:  Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.  Maintains a working relationship with parents and children.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Report unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor or other person of responsibility if your immediate supervisor is not available.
  2. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. 
  3. Follow departmental dress code.  No alterations to the dress code are allowed.
  4. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  5. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  6. Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  7. Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
  8. Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  9. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other programs.
  10. Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  11. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.  Reports damaged equipment.
  12. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  13. Builds relationships with members and building participants.
  14. Exemplify the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
  15. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.
  16. Showing up for all scheduled dates on time and in proper attire.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  2. Must be at least 16 years of age.
  3. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  4. Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred: sales & engagement experience required.
  5. Previous supervisory experience in customer service preferred.
  6. Must have the knowledge required for successful operation; ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteer leaders, YMCA members, and the general public is essential; ability to network and engage internal and external customers.
  7. Must be personable and demonstrate integrity and honesty.  Must be a team player, able to effectively relate to all levels of staff and management.  Must possess excellent organizational skills and written/oral communication skills.
  8. Experience with DAXKO preferred.
  9. Required trainings:
    1. Within 30 days of hire:     Child Abuse Prevention (West Bend online).
    2. Within 30 days of hire:     Blood Borne Pathogens (West Bend online).
    3. Within 60 days of hire:     CPR and First Aid
    4. Within 90 days of hire:     Listen First and Y Welcome
  10. Proficient in all standard business software including Google platforms and Microsoft Office.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing duties of this job, the employee is often required to:  climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
  2. The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and may be exposed to pool chemicals as well.
  3. The work is performed both indoors and out and may require travel to various locations.
  4. While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time and will be exposed to hot and cold conditions.
  5. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close & distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.
  6. Ability to swim effectively in order to demonstrate skills to participants.
  7. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  8. Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average size child.
