Primary Purpose: To provide transportation training in the safe operation of school buses, school bus equipment and student management. To respond to and support vehicle accidents, assist school bus drivers and monitors to address student management and route safety issues.  Support and assist the district, as required, in the delivery of transportation services

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High school Diploma or equivalent (ex: GED)
  • Current Texas School Bus Driver medical examination.
  • Current DPS certification for School Bus Drivers
  • Current Texas Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License, with “P” and “S” endorsements
  • Driving record with 3 or less penalty points
  • TEEX School Bus Driver Training the Trainer Program or TAPT Driver Trainer Academy preferred
  • CPR certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Exceptional communication, public relation and interpersonal skills
  • Possess thorough knowledge of La Joya ISD and its policies
  • Able to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer skills and experience using MS word, Excel and Power Point.   
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Experience:

  • 2 years minimum/5 years preferred School Bus Driving and/or working as School Bus Driver Trainer

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  1. Train School Bus Drivers to be able to obtain a commercial driver’s license and to safely operate a school bus in accordance with state laws, district policies and procedures and student behavior management.
  2. Train School Bus Monitors in student behavior management and the use of specialized equipment required for the safe transport of students.
  3. Provide retraining as directed and post-accident training to those employees involved in accidents, focusing on the conditions and actions causing the accident as determined by the accident investigation.
  4. Assist in the evaluation to determine if an employee meets the standards and expectations of the district, with respect to safety.
  5. Recommend the completion of specific safety training before an employee is allowed to continue working or the performance of an operation.
  6. Recommend safety and training programs to address safety needs as a result of observation, discussion with transportation personnel, vehicle inspections and participation in accident response and investigations.
  7. Work cooperatively with the Transportation Director to recommend proper safety equipment or district procedures needed to improve transportation safety.
  8. Coordinate and conduct monthly safety meetings to refresh and impart new safety training.
  9. Inspect vehicles, conduct loading/unloading zone assessments and road observations as directed and document and report findings.
  10. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  11. Support delivery of Transportation Services by driving school bus routes, trips, etc…as required.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; two-way radio; Navigation Software; school bus; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher;
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking, climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) on a daily basis
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work early shift; may work irregular and prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
