Position Overview:

The Police Sergeant serves as a supervisory leader within the La Joya ISD Police Department. This position is responsible for overseeing daily law enforcement operations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies, and supporting a safe and secure educational environment. The Sergeant performs all duties of a Police Officer in addition to supervisory and administrative responsibilities.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification/Requirements:

  • High school diploma/equivalent or higher, some college hours preferred
  • Current TCLEOSE Intermediate Peace Officers License or (in progress)
  • Must have valid Texas Operator’s License
  • Must have a driving record which meets acceptable standards
  • Must be mentally and physically fit to perform duties, and comply with TCLEOSE hiring standards for peace officer licensing

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Texas Laws that applies to public schools
  • Basic knowledge of computers and contemporary computer programs
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with District employees and general public
  • Solve problems of a routine degree or complexity under pressure

Experience:

  • Minimum three years police experience, previous supervisory experience desirable
  • Experience in Police Patrol, Juvenile Law, Police Traffic, to include traffic control, and Police Records is highly desirable
  • Experience with police investigations, case management, and criminal case presentations

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Police Sergeant shall perform all duties outlined in the Police Officer Job Description, in addition to the following:

  1. Enforces all laws of the Texas Educational Code and the State of Texas.
  2. Enforces daily routine procedures necessary for the safe protection of students, staff and property.
  3. Insure necessary reports are submitted to the Chief of Police and Administrators in a timely manner.
  4. Participate in the day-to-day functions of Police Services, creating structures to better facilitate assigned services to the district.
  5. Review offense reports submitted by assigned officers.
  6. Develop and maintain appropriate records.
  7. Responsible for assignments and scheduling of assigned personnel to maximize the overall safety of district students, personnel, and properties.
  8. Coordinate maintenance of department vehicles assigned; maintenance of issued department equipment radio’s uniforms, keys etc.
  9. Insure officers follow department general orders, district policy and department S.O.P.
  10. Assist other law enforcement agencies, when requested, in emergency situations and maintains good working relations.
  11. Stays abreast of all current state, local and district laws and rules which govern the proper administration of law enforcement.
  12. Immediately reports any unusual circumstances or emergencies to the Chief of Police.
  13. Ensures that officers patrol all school properties to detect unauthorized persons or vehicles.
  14. Informs Chief of Police and appropriate administrators of any injuries or accidents involving students and district personnel (to include making reports).
  15. Plans and coordinates Security coverage at athletic activities and special school events.
  16. Assists school administrators with traffic control problems which would include addressing engineering issues, traffic law education, and the development of traffic flow plans.
  17. Supervises and instructs police and assigned civilian personnel on daily procedures and expectations and reports information directly to Chief of Police.
  18. Serves as Officer-in-Charge in absence of Chief of Police.
  19. Maintains a professional level of confidentiality of department and district matters.
  20. Manage special assignments which involve Police Services personnel.
  21. Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the LJISD Safety Program.
  22. Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  23. Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
  24. Performs any other duties assigned by the Chief of Police and/or Superintendent.
  25. Provides optimal customer service to all students, employees, parents, community, members and any other stakeholders of the district.

Mental Demands/ Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Mental Demands: Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; ability to multi-task.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing; ability to operate a motor vehicle; specific hearing and visual requirements; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be subjected to adverse and hazardous working conditions.  Work outdoors in varying climate conditions; drive in all different areas of the district at odd hours.  Be able to work three rotating shifts (day, evening and graveyard shifts) to include Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.

 

Termination of Appointment:

The Chief of Police, with the approval of the Superintendent or designee, may terminate the appointment if the appointee fails to meet the duties and responsibilities outlined in this position description.
