La Jolla Country Day School is seeking a dynamic, relationship-driven, and mission-aligned Assistant Director of Athletics and Physical Education to support the leadership and daily operations of a thriving, community-centered athletics program. This full-time, exempt position reports directly to the Director of Athletics and Physical Education and plays a critical role in advancing a comprehensive program that develops student-athletes as leaders both on and off the field.

The Assistant Director will collaborate closely with coaches, faculty, students, and families to ensure the athletics and physical education programs reflect the school’s mission and values. This role requires a highly organized, visible, and engaged leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about student development, teamwork, and community building.

A strong understanding of interscholastic athletics, physical education, and student development is essential. The Assistant Director must be able to support and articulate the full student-athlete experience, from foundational skill-building in early years through competitive excellence and leadership development in Upper School.

The ideal candidate brings experience in education and athletics, exceptional organizational and communication skills, and a collaborative, growth-oriented mindset.

What You’ll Do

  • Game Operations & Event Management
    • Serve as administrator on duty for all home and select away athletic events
    • Oversee facility setup and breakdown for contests
    • Coordinate logistics, communication, and event operations
    • Maintain gym monitors and lobby displays
  • Coaching Support & Program Oversight
    • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and evaluating coaches
    • Observe practices and physical education classes; provide constructive feedback
    • Support equipment/uniform purchasing, and inventory cycles
    • Communicate with coaches regarding student-athlete academic progress and wellbeing
    • Support student-athlete leadership programming across all seasons
    • Help facilitate workshops and leadership engagement opportunities
  • Athletic Communications & Digital Media
    • Manage the athletics app, website, and social media platforms
    • Create and distribute game-day and weekly promotional graphics
    • Coordinate local media coverage
    • Produce alumni and athletics newsletters
    • Organize materials for admissions, marketing, and special events
  • Athletic Administration & Compliance
    • Monitor athletic platforms for accuracy (e.g., schedules, scores, rosters)
    • Assist with eligibility, transfers, and compliance documentation
    • Develop and distribute weekly facilities and lighting schedules
    • Coordinate video and analytics partnerships
  • Community & School Engagement
    • Serve on the Upper School Academic Council and student support teams
    • Collaborate with student leadership groups and admissions
    • Build connections between Upper School athletes and younger students
    • Chair the Hall of Fame Committee and support alumni engagement
    • Partner with the Booster Club and assist with special events

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience as a school administrator, coach, and/or classroom teacher, preferably in an independent school setting
  • Willingness to serve as an assistant coach as needed (not as a head coach)
  • Strong understanding of curriculum and student development
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and decision-making ability
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office; willingness to learn additional platforms

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Full-time, in-person, campus-based role
  • Work occurs in office, classroom, and outdoor athletic environments
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, and sitting required
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs occasionally
  • Moderate to loud noise levels, particularly during athletic events
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for events
