Position: School Nurse – La Conner School District Position beginning 26/27 School Year

Employment Status: .4 FTE Continuing Position

Salary: Per adopted Certificated Salary Schedule

Minimum Qualifications:

· Valid Washington State registered nurse (RN) license

· Valid Washington State ESA certification as School Nurse

Preferred Qualifications:

· Bachelor of Science degree or higher in nursing

· Preferred at least three years of related experience

· Preferred experience working in a school District as School Nurse

Evaluation

· Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of certificated personnel.

Licenses, Certificates, Special Requirements:

· Fingerprints (successful WSP and FBI clearance)

· Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)

· I-9 Employment Eligibility (citizen or legal alien status)

· HIV/HBV Training (district will provide but must be obtained within 60 days of employment)

· Harassment Prevention Training (district will provide but must be obtained within 60 days of employment)

· Current CPR/First Aid card to be maintained during duration of the job

· Valid WA State registered Nurse license to be maintained during duration of the job

General Job Summary:

To provide professional nursing services to prevent, identify, and remedy health problems which may interfere with the academic progress and the social and emotional well-being of students. The job of School Nurse will oversee the individual health needs of students; implementing health care plans for students with special health needs; ensuring district, state and federal health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff and administrators; facilitating mandated health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow-up treatment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

· Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.

· Assess individual students health state for the purpose of determining acuity and specific needs to ensure safety and well-being.

· Assesses student population for the purpose of identifying health needs.

· Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and /or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements.

· Conducts or facilitates programs and/or activities (e.g. hearing/vision/scoliosis screening, health education, registration, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements and providing any follow up evaluations.

· Maintains contact with parent/guardian for the purpose of alerting them to any changes in student health and/or referring students for further medical/emotional intervention as needed.

· Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, and/or other records for the purpose of ensuring student health records are up to date and in compliance with state laws.

· Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. IEP meetings, monthly school Nurse meetings, Kindergarten registration, etc.) for the purpose of gathering and sharing information and/or improving skills/knowledge.

· Prepares a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

· Prepares health care and emergency care plans for the purpose of addressing students’ health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physicians.

· Refers students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical/dental treatment, counseling, etc.

· Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining student’s personal safety, a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.

· Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.

· Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.

· Reviews medical data collection forms per school site as needed for the purpose of evaluation individual student needs and assisting each school in updating student records.

· Trains general district staff regarding specific health conditions (e.g. diabetes, allergies, asthma, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring staff have information to effectively deal with students with health conditions.

· Trains personnel that work directly with students health needs (e.g. administering medications, specialized procedures, allergies, for feeding administration, catheterizations, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that district personnel have the necessary knowledge to perform their functions in compliance with district, state and federal requirements.

· Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

Physical and Mental Demands

May require prolonged standing, sitting, walking, verbal and written communication, hearing, lifting, exposure to student-carried diseases, and noise levels, and assisting students with health needs. Mental demands include organizational skills, concentration, frequent interruptions, creativity, adaptability, working independently, yet as a team member, self-discipline in behavior and attitude, decision making, and dealing with distraught/angry/hostile individuals.

School environment, indoors and occasionally outdoors in possible inclement weather. May be necessary to attend morning/evening meetings or activities. May represent the district on potentially sensitive or controversial matters.
