Position: Custodian – Leave replacement
La Conner Elementary School
Employment Status:Temporary position, approximate dates 4/13/26 – 6/24/26
8 hours per day, evening shift.
Salary and Benefits:
In accordance with the PSE salary schedule, currently $29.09 to $35.11 per hour depending on experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Graduation from high school or equivalent.
· Able to follow assigned work schedules and follow written work instructions.
· Proven ability to work independently.
· Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.
· Proven ability to understand labels on chemicals and supplies including the ability to mix solvents at the proper concentration level.
· Demonstrated ability to manage critical events calmly
· Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with supervisors, district patrons, staff members, contractors and vendors.
· Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.
· Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of the assigned building, staff and community users. Able to take care of scheduled and non-scheduled cleaning activities and job-related tasks.
· Physical ability and stamina to do the work normally required and expected of a school custodian. Able to safely lift and regularly carry loads up to 50 pounds. Ability to work on ladders and in high places as needed and as required by the work of a custodian.
· Demonstrated ability to make essential modifications in the daily routine if and when unexpected circumstances are present.
· Demonstrated personal skills and a work history showing consistent appropriate personal skills and decision-making skills to work around students, staff and school patrons.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Formal training that focuses on school safety and accident prevention
· Prior experience in an educational support position
· Prior training in commercial cleaning methods
· Prior custodial experience
Special Requirements:
· Fingerprints (successful WSP and FBI clearance)
· Copy of high school diploma or equivalent
· Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
· I-9 Employment Eligibility (citizen or legal alien status)
· Current CPR/First Aid card or willingness to seek training
· HIV/HBV Training (district will provide but must be obtained within 60 days of employment)
· Harassment Prevention Training (district will provide but must be obtained within 60 days of employment)
General Job Summary:
The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. The school custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.
The school custodian receives day-to-day direction and receives specific performance requirements from the supervisor for maintenance/custodial. The school custodian operates within district and school policies and procedures, and by applying acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.
· Use hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher and vacuum as required to accomplish cleaning.
· Use cleaning chemicals and supplies as needed to accomplish a wide variety of cleaning tasks.
· Maintain floor, walls, carpets and furniture in a clean and sanitary condition. Clean and sanitize toilet/shower rooms and fixtures.
· Apply cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.
· Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
· Empty wastebaskets and trash containers inside and outside the building perimeter, clean whiteboard trays, dust furniture and other vertical and horizontal surfaces, sweep, mop and polish/wax floors.
· Advise maintenance department on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.
· Replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures; stock tissue and other restroom dispensers.
· Set up and remove furniture as required (including cafeteria tables)
· Perform minor painting to walls, rails, playgrounds and other areas of the school.
· Keep all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.
· Maintain awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.
· Secure equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
· Follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
· Periodically inspect, or otherwise maintain awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
· Secure school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and code out buildings at end of shift.
· Check and communicate via district provided email account at least daily to stay current on district notifications
· Use computer equipment software to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.
· Other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, kneel, push, pull, grasp, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing and working at heights. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.
Employee will spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, and walking. Employee will frequently carry, move and lift 20 pounds and occasionally up to 60 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to properly use safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.
Ability to communicate verbally in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
