Farmworkers and Laborers, Crop

Workers will perform the following tasks under the instruction of a supervisor, Tobacco: Setting: When setting tobacco by machine: the setter/transplanter must be loaded with plant trays. The worker must drop one plant in each cone repeatedly without missing a cone. Setting by hand, any cone missed will be then set out by hand by workers walking behind. These workers will carry trays of tobacco plant, they will place one plant in the missing space by making a hole and place the plant in the hole. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. Resetting: workers will reset plants that have died or are missing in the same manner as stated above, setting by hand. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. Chopping and/or pulling weeds: Workers will work across a field removing weeds either with a hoe or by hand, being sure to remove it by the roots. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. Setting up plants; In the event of a wind storm plants may need to be set upright. This will be done by working your way down a row, gently pushing the plant upright and by using your foot apply dirt at the base of the plant to set it straight. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. Topping and suckering: Workers will start in a row with the first tobacco plant breaking off the top flower by hand properly without damaging leafs below. The worker must then use both hands in order to remove all the suckers that are in between the tobacco leaf and the stem of the tobacco plant. The worker will walk down his designated row working on every tobacco plant. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. Harvesting period: Harvesting will be done either by hand or by machine. When harvesting by hand workers will again walk down the tobacco field by row pulling off the bottom 3 to 5 ripe leafs off of every plant. If the leaf is not ripe you must leave it alone. The worker will then carry a handful of leaves to the trailer. Any leaves dropped by the worker must be picked up. The worker will do this process 3 to 4 different period of times as leaves ripen. If harvested by machine there are many different jobs that will need to be completed at the same time. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. The field worker will need to assist with keeping the machine running effectively. At times the machine may need to be cleared or cleared of clogs. A worker may need to drive tractor hauling tobacco in a buggy to the trailer. Workers will assist with unloading the leaves onto a trailer by leveling and placing leaves so as to keep them from falling off the trailer. They will pick up any leaves that fall on the ground. At the end of the day workers will need to clean up the area. The barn workers will assist with unloading leaves from the trailer. They will assist with keeping the machine running effectively by clearing clogs. They will be putting leaves into boxes either manually or by machine. They will assist with leveling the tobacco inside the boxes being sure to adequately fill the corners. Once boxes are full, they will place rods into boxes and assist with getting boxes moved by tow motor and loaded into the barns. Leaves will be picked up and put into boxes. Once tobacco is cured workers will assist with baling tobacco. Workers will remove leaves from the boxes, they will manually pick out any green or damaged leaves before putting it into a baler. They will assist with keeping the machine running effectively by clearing clogs. All leaves will need to be picked up. At the end of the day all work areas and machines will need to be cleaned and cleared.
