Reports to: D & I Railroad General Manager
Job Summary:
The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily, hands-on logistics of freight transport. This position will manage train crews and dispatchers to ensure safe, cost-effective, and on-time performance. This includes strict compliance with federal regulations and seamless interchanges with Class 1 railroads. This position will handle all operations between Sioux City, IA and Dell Rapids, SD.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct Reports: Engineers, Conductors, and Support Specialist.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Follows all company safety and environmental policies and all federal regulations (OSHA, MSHA, FRA, EPA, DOT, and SDDANR, IADENR).
• Coordinates, plans, and manages train crew members and any other activities assigned.
• Manages and coordinates scheduling, training, and evaluations.
• Coordinates the efficient delivery of freight and ensures smooth railcar interchanges with Class 1 railroads.
• Creates and manages the daily operations plan.
• Manages and coordinates customer car storage.
• Works closely with the Maintenance of Way and Locomotive Maintenance Managers to schedule track repairs and locomotive maintenance.
• Manages department budgets, tracks KPI, and implements continuous improvements.
• Must have a deep understanding of the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) and federal railroad regulations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Build and maintain relationships with employees, customers, vendors, associations, and state agencies.
• Continue to build a relationship with the Union Pacific, BNSF, and Canadian National to grow our operations and partnership.
• Provide excellent customer service by addressing customer inquiries, resolving complaints, and ensuring customer satisfaction throughout the process.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 5-8 Years of progressive leadership experience in the railroad industry.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
• Must be able to work in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather, noise, and dust.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of standing.
• Must be able to withstand periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
