What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Staff position at L.A. Burdick Chocolates?
Title: Chief of Staff
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Location: Boston, MA
Job Description:
L.A. Burdick is hiring a Chief of Staff to work directly with the CEO and lead cross-functional execution across the company. This is a hands-on role. You will be expected to manage strategic initiatives while also stepping into day-to-day operations - from identifying new retail locations and supporting financial decisions to packing boxes or solving operational issues at the factory.
You’ll work across all departments - operations, finance, production, and retail - to ensure projects move forward, decisions get made, and problems get resolved. You will travel frequently to store and factory locations and be involved wherever the company needs support.
We are looking for someone who is humble, proactive, and highly capable - someone who can shift quickly between strategic and executional work with ease.
- Project Management: Lead ad hoc initiatives from scoping to implementation. Drive operational improvement, financial visibility, and strategic growth efforts across the business.
- On-the-Ground Support: Jump in wherever needed - whether helping staff a retail pop-up, resolving production issues, or manually supporting a store setup.
- Cross-Team Communication: Serve as liaison between CEO and department heads. Prepare agendas, drive accountability, and ensure alignment through weekly leadership meetings and cross-departmental syncs.
- Operational Oversight: Engage directly with factory and retail teams. Identify bottlenecks, implement processes, and support execution of initiatives across sourcing, production, and delivery.
- Business Support: Represent the CEO in discussions with vendors, contractors, and partners. Support store openings, factory upgrades, and vendor negotiations.
- Reporting: Analyze business data, prepare reports, and make recommendations based on ERP / NetSuite and Excel outputs.
- Seasonal Readiness: Serve as a leadership anchor during peak periods. Ensure operational resilience and team execution during key retail seasons.
- Travel & On-Site Work: Must be available for regular weekly travel to Walpole factory and periodic travel to retail locations.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA a plus
- 5 years’ experience in consulting, operations, or finance. Retail or CPG experience preferred.
- Proven success managing projects across functions and teams.
- Highly proficient in Excel, Powerpoint, and ERP systems (NetSuite a plus).
- Strong communicator with ability to influence up and down the org chart.
- Driver’s license and ability to travel weekly.
- Low ego, high output mindset. Willingness to operate in both strategic and tactical roles.
