Sr. Research Scientist II

Kyowa Kirin is a fast-growing global specialty pharmaceutical company that applies state-of-the-art biotechnologies to discover and deliver novel medicines in four disease areas: bone and mineral; intractable hematologic; hematology oncology; and rare disease.  A Japan-based company, our goal is to translate science into smiles by delivering therapies where no adequate treatments currently exist, working from drug discovery to product development and commercialization. Summary:

The Senior Research Scientist II will support Kyowa Kirin’s cell and gene therapy pipeline programs in a highly collaborative and cross-functional environment. This position will play a vital role in developing next-generation cell and gene therapy programs from early drug discovery to Investigational New Drug (IND) submission.

Essential Functions:

•    Supports/leads exploration efforts for next-generation cell and gene therapies.
•    Designs, plans, executes, and manages projects from discovery to proof-of-concept pharmacology studies.
•    Supports the review and oversight of projects with guidance from senior leadership.
•    Assists research leadership in managing the research portfolio.
•    Explores, identifies and evaluates advanced technologies and concepts for cell and gene therapy.
•    Prepares and/or reviews necessary documentation for project reviews (proposals, monthly, quarterly, annual, or study reports), patent applications, publications, and/or animal, biosafety, or human subject protocols. 
•    Manages, trains and oversees teams of scientists and research associates.
•    Collaborates and leverages contract research organizations (CROs) and academic partners to effectively advance programs.

Requirements:

Education
Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Immunology, Oncology, Hematology, Stem Cell or Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or closely related discipline required.

Experience
•    Minimum 7 years biotech/pharma or academia experience, or a demonstrated track record that qualifies the candidate to fulfill the role of Senior Research Scientist II in the cell and gene therapy field.
•    Hands-on experience in discovering, developing and characterizing cell and gene therapy products. 
•    Strong familiarity with all aspects of cell and gene therapy research, including functional evaluation, genetic modifications, process development and analytical characterization.
•    Familiarity with synthetic biology approaches, including molecular gates and switches. 
•    Experience with differentiation of human stem cells to various types of immune cells is highly desired. Self-motivated and creative professionals with a proven ability to lead teams and manage projects effectively.

Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of Immunology and/or Cancer Biology. Familiarity with flow cytometry and other immunostaining assays. Demonstrated experience with gene modification and genome editing technologies. Stem cell culturing and differentiation of immune cells.

Working Conditions:

Requires up to 15% domestic and international travel

Annualized base salary ranges from $165,000 - $180,000 plus short term incentive bonus; actual salaries will vary and may be above or below this range commensurate with various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, and merit.
