Logistics Manager

Under minimal supervision, oversee day to day operations of the Transportation departments at Kurtz Bros, Inc. & Earth ‘n Wood; while working on individual workload; train drivers on company policies and procedures; Schedule, prioritize and delegate work and perform related duties as assigned.  Works with and through management, to ensure compliance with safety and environmental procedures and to assist in the achievement of profitability/productivity requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

• Leadership over logistics to successfully achieve and support company goals.
• Manage the performance of hourly paid employees under his/her responsibility, resolve performance issues, and ensure compliance with policies and procedures
• Collaborate with other managers and team members in order to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
• Responsible for logistic decisions, such as cartage rates, fuel surcharge and schedule changes
• Accountable for P & L performance and continuous improvement for company logistics.
• Prepare weekly P & L reports and distribute information to appropriate departments
• Continuous development and expansion of our subcontract trucking companies.
• Responsible for negotiations with vendors and sub-contractors
• Implement and refine logistic policies creating best practices.
• Develop and coach employees successfully to create and support company growth goals. 
• Ensure accurate and timely payment for sub-contractors.
• Recommend capital expenditures for acquisition of new equipment or property to increase efficiency and services of the logistics team
• Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation / Federal Motor Carrier Administration (DOT/FMCSA). 
• Advises management on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions. 
• Plans and implements training for employees in work site safety practices. 
• Maintain all driver files in compliance with DOT/FMCSA.
• Works with HR to maintain safety files and records 
• Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares report identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by company personnel and senior management. 
• Sets up and conducts driver training. 
• Monitor safety and logistic operations to ensure that employees comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, DOT and government regulations
• Local travel to other KB sites may be required on an intermittent basis 
• Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary
• Other duties may be assigned.  

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent work experience required, Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Logistics, or computer science preferred
• At least 7 years in the distribution or transportation industry.
• 5 years of leadership experience in transportation related regulations
• Experience with dispatching Software or a similar program preferred
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations, driver logs, and fleet safety programs. 
• Willingness to learn and grow within the role
• Class A CDL preferred

Knowledge/Skills

• Familiarity with local roadways and interstates in Cuyahoga County, Northern Ohio and surrounding areas preferred
• Ability to perform and make decisions in a high volume, fast-paced environment
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with particular attention to detail
• Flexible to work various hours during busy season (spring through early summer)
• Good communication and listening skills
