About Kulis Law

Kulis Law is a Chicago-based boutique law firm that, for more than 30 years, has specialized in civil rights and commercial litigation. We represent victims of police misconduct in Illinois, Indiana, and across the country, and small businesses in contractual disputes.

This position is fully in-person. All paralegals/legal assistants are expected to be in our office in the Chicago Loop from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.

Job Functions

Since Kulis Law is a small, three-attorney firm, our paralegals/legal assistants are tasked with a wide range of responsibilities. Most tasks fall into two categories: litigation and firm management.

Litigation Tasks

Our paralegals/legal assistants are involved with every one of our cases at each stage of the litigation process. You will be expected to:

  • Investigate potential cases: corresponding with potential clients and organizing follow-up, submitting public records requests, reviewing claims and evidence, drafting memoranda with recommendations for attorneys.
  • Obtain medical bills and records and correspond with Medicare/Medicaid agencies regarding liens.
  • Draft and review emails, letters, and legal documents including complaints, motions, and subpoenas.
  • Assist attorneys during discovery: review information and documentation provided by opposing parties, work with our clients to answer interrogatories and requests for production, prepare documents for production to opposing counsel.
  • Draft settlement documents from templates and facilitate the settlement process.
  • Complete general case management tasks: client communications, scheduling depositions and court reporters, noticing up motions before the court, corresponding with court clerks.

Firm Management Tasks

Our paralegals/legal assistants also provide integral support to the forward progress of the firm. You will be expected to:

  • Manage firm calendar/scheduling.
  • Keep track of the firm’s caseload, particularly potential cases and settled cases.
  • Generate and review invoices and issue to our non-contingency clients.
  • Create posts for Kulis Law social media and website.
  • Provide basic technical support for attorneys as necessary.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and direct callers to the relevant attorneys.

This list is not exhaustive.
