Automotive Technician / Service Writer

Kuhn Brothers Service Center – Sherwood, Ohio

Kuhn Brothers Service Center is looking for an experienced automotive technician who also has the communication and organizational skills to work with customers and grow into additional service-writing responsibilities over time.

This position will primarily be a hands-on automotive technician role initially. However, we're looking for someone who is capable and interested in working on both sides of the counter.

As the position develops, the right person will have the opportunity to take on more responsibility with customers, estimates, scheduling, parts and the day-to-day operation of the front office.

We're looking for a long-term addition to our team and are willing to be patient to find the right person.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities will initially be focused primarily on automotive diagnosis and repair and may include:

• Diagnose automotive problems
• Troubleshoot electrical and drivability concerns
• Perform general mechanical repairs and maintenance
• Use scan tools, diagnostic equipment and service information to accurately identify problems
• Perform inspections and identify needed or recommended repairs
• Communicate diagnostic findings and repair needs with the service writer
• Complete repairs accurately and efficiently
• Perform final quality-control checks
• Maintain a clean and organized work area
• Work with the rest of the shop to keep jobs moving efficiently

As the position develops, responsibilities may increasingly include:

• Greet customers and discuss vehicle concerns
• Answer phones and schedule service appointments
• Write repair orders
• Prepare estimates
• Explain diagnostic findings and recommended repairs to customers
• Obtain customer authorization for repairs
• Source and order parts
• Coordinate with technicians on repair progress
• Help organize the daily shop schedule and workflow
• Maintain accurate service records
• Follow jobs from the customer's initial concern through completed repair

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is first and foremost a capable automotive technician, but we're looking for more than someone who simply wants to turn wrenches.

• Has solid automotive repair experience
• Has strong diagnostic and troubleshooting ability
• Understands modern automotive electrical systems
• Can perform a wide variety of general mechanical repairs
• Understands how to diagnose problems rather than simply replace parts
• Communicates comfortably and professionally
• Is comfortable using computers and automotive service software
• Is organized and able to handle multiple priorities
• Works well as part of a small team
• Takes ownership of problems and follows through
• Can work independently
• Is dependable and consistently shows up ready to work
• Takes pride in doing things correctly
• Is interested in a stable, long-term position

Previous service-writing experience is helpful, but not required.

We're more interested in finding a strong technician who has the personality, communication skills and desire to learn the service-writing side of the business.

Opportunity to Grow Beyond the Bay

We recognize that a good automotive technician may not want to spend his or her entire career working in a bay full-time.

This position provides an opportunity to continue doing hands-on automotive work while learning and taking on more of the customer service and business side of an independent repair shop.

The transition does not need to happen immediately. Initially, the majority of the position will be automotive diagnosis and repair.

Over time, the right person will have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility in service writing, customer communication, estimating, scheduling, parts and shop operations.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
