KSPS PBS is seeking a Controller / Director of Finance to lead the organization’s financial management and establish a fully in-house accounting function. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, this position provides both strategic financial leadership and hands-on execution of the organization’s daily accounting operations.

This role is a department-of-one leadership position responsible for the full spectrum of nonprofit financial management. The Controller will oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, audit preparation, compliance, and financial systems development. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating independently, preparing Board-level financial reports, and also performing transactional accounting work such as accounts payable and reconciliations.

The Controller works closely with the Chief Administrative Officer, General Manager, Development team, Board Finance Committee, external auditors, and banking partners to support financial integrity, transparency, and the long-term sustainability of the organization. This is an in-office position.

• Lead the transition of accounting operations from an outsourced accounting provider to an in-house financial management structure.
• Oversee migration, reconciliation, and validation of historical accounting records and financial data.
• Develop and maintain the organization’s nonprofit chart of accounts.
• Establish and document financial policies, procedures, and internal control systems.
• Develop workflows for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll integration, and month-end close processes.
• Manage the organization’s general ledger and perform monthly financial close activities.
• Process accounts payable and manage vendor payment workflows.
• Oversee accounts receivable including pledge receivables and corporate underwriting revenue.
• Reconcile bank accounts, investment accounts, and other financial accounts.
• Maintain fixed asset schedules and documentation.
• Oversee payroll accounting and benefit allocations in coordination with payroll providers.
• Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and reports for leadership and the Board of Directors.
• Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and organizational reserve levels.
• Track restricted and unrestricted net assets in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
• Manage grant accounting and financial reporting requirements.
• Prepare functional expense allocations including program, management and general, and fundraising.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial scenario planning.
• Serve as primary liaison to external auditors and coordinate the annual audit process.
• Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
• Support preparation of IRS Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain a strong internal control environment.
• Support CPB reporting requirements where applicable.
• Prepare financial materials for Finance Committee and Board meetings.
• Present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders and organizational leadership.
• Provide financial insight to support organizational strategy and decision-making.

Education/Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
• Minimum five years of nonprofit accounting experience
• Demonstrated experience managing full-cycle accounting operations
• Experience preparing for and supporting annual audits
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and fund accounting
• Experience tracking restricted funds and grant revenue
• Ability and willingness to perform detailed transactional accounting work

Preferred Experience
• CPA designation preferred
• Seven to ten or more years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience leading financial system transitions or implementations
• Experience in public media or similarly regulated nonprofit environments

Physical Abilities

Ability to sit, stand, and walk regularly; frequently use hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment; and occasionally lift or carry materials up to 20 pounds. Occasional evening attendance at Board or Finance Committee meetings may be required.

Mental & Other Skills/Abilities

Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a department-of-one environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interpret financial reports, grant requirements, and regulatory guidance. Strong financial judgment and decision-making ability. High level of discretion and ability to manage confidential financial information. Ability to work effectively with executive leadership and volunteer Board members.

Salary Range is $115,000-$125.000 commensurate with experience and credentials.
