The day-to-day work involves more than just "putting pipes together." It requires blueprint literacy and physical stamina.

  • Installation: Measuring, cutting, threading, and grooving pipes (steel and CPVC) according to fire codes and blueprints, fabricating.
  • System Assembly: Installing overhead piping, fire pumps, standpipes, and various sprinkler heads (pendent, upright, and sidewall).
  • Testing: Conducting hydrostatic pressure tests to ensure the system is leak-proof and compliant with NFPA 13 standards.
  • Maintenance: Inspecting existing systems, replacing corroded heads, and troubleshooting malfunctioning valves or backflow preventers.
  • Safety Compliance: Operating heavy machinery like scissor lifts and threading machines while adhering strictly to OSHA standards.

You’ll be expected to master a specific kit of tools and technical concepts:

Physical & Environmental Demands

This is a "boots on the ground" trade. It’s not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights.

  • Heights: Much of the work is done on ladders, scaffolding, or motorized lifts near the ceiling.
  • Strength: You must be able to lift and maneuver heavy lengths of steel pipe (often 50 lbs).
