Definition:
The Training & Safety Coordinator is an exempt, salaried position under the direction of the Student Transportation Operations Manager. In this role, the coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all driver training and safety programs. This includes supporting new and existing drivers in obtaining and maintaining CDL certification, coordinating required training programs, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and company safety regulations.
The coordinator works closely with the Student Transportation Operations Manager and office staff to conduct training, investigate incidents, and promote a culture of safety across all terminal operations.
Specific Duties:
- Schedule and conduct classroom training in coordination with trainers, Safety personnel, and office staff.
- Schedule and conduct behind-the-wheel training for new and existing drivers.
- Provide CDL preparation and ongoing driver development training.
- Recruit, assist, and interview driver candidates and prepare them for CDL and/or non-CDL positions.
- Develop and deliver post-accident remedial training in coordination with Safety and Compliance personnel.
- Conduct driver evaluations (post-incident, bi-annual, or as required).
- Maintain training records and ensure completion of all required certifications and re-certifications.
- Develop and implement workforce safety programs, including but not limited to:
- Customer service training
- Workplace safety (OSHA-related topics)
- Emergency response procedures
- Assist the Terminal Manager in preparing and conducting monthly safety meetings.
- Conduct accident/incident investigations, including employee injury reports and root cause analysis.
- Ensure that all accidents/incidents are properly documented, reported, and filed within required timelines.
- Maintain OSHA logs and all required safety documentation.
- Oversee Workers’ Compensation reporting and act as a liaison for ongoing claims.
- Monitor and document daily pre/post-trip inspections and report violations.
- Assist in scheduling and ensuring compliance with drug and alcohol testing per FMCSA/DOT regulations.
- Coordinate and conduct bus evacuation drills and safety training for students.
- Assist in evaluating safe routes and bus stops.
- Participate in safety education initiatives with schools, parents, and local emergency services.
- Retrieve, review, and manage video footage related to incidents in accordance with company policies.
- Assist dispatch and operations as needed, including driving when necessary.
- Compose, type, and maintain reports, correspondence, and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
- Assist with office duties including answering phones and directing communications.
- Travel to other company locations as needed.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by Management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
- Must obtain and maintain:
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Air Brake restriction removed
- PA School Bus Driver certification and physical
- Must obtain or be willing to obtain School Bus Instructor certification.
- Must be able to pass all required background clearances.
- Ability to obtain safety-related certifications as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

- Ability to develop and implement comprehensive safety and training programs.
- Knowledge of transportation safety regulations (FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, PUC, DOL, etc.)

- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are primarily in an operating environment. This role requires flexibility, including evenings and weekends, to meet business needs.
- Work is primarily indoors with periodic outdoor duties in all weather conditions.
- Occasional work in garage/maintenance areas for employee interaction.
- Position may require travel, including overnight travel, within Pennsylvania and occasionally outside the state.
- Position may require working more than 40 hours per week.
