JOB SUMMARY
The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I is an entry-level diesel mechanic position. This role is responsible for learning and becoming familiar with shop facilities, equipment, and maintenance processes. Under direct supervision, the Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I assists with inspecting, repairing, and maintaining fleet vehicles and agricultural equipment. This position provides hands-on training and development toward independent equipment maintenance responsibilities.
The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I demonstrates the aptitude to troubleshoot mechanical issues involving trucks and heavy equipment, including disassembly and reassembly of engines and related components. At times, work may be performed in the field to repair agricultural equipment. This role requires learning beyond engine repair, including electrical systems, hydraulics, and fuel and brake systems.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic and tactical work for which this position is accountable
Under supervision, the Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I is responsible for:
· Assisting in inspections, maintenance, and repairs of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including
trucks, trailers, forklifts, pickups, and farm equipment;
· Assisting with diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, electrical troubleshooting, steering, and
cooling systems;
· Training and working alongside experienced mechanics to develop advanced maintenance skills;
· Ensuring all services and repairs comply with established safety procedures;
· Driving delivery or manure trucks as needed;
· Providing assistance in the fields during peak planting and harvesting seasons (Clarence Shop); and
· Performing other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Capabilities and traits essential to perform satisfactorily
· Attention to Detail: Ability to focus on detailed inspections and repairs of trucks and heavy
equipment.
· Mechanical Skills: Strong interest and aptitude for learning complex machinery, engines, and tools.
· Technical Skills: Ability to learn and work with electronic systems, read schematics and blueprints, and
use diagnostic equipment.
· Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to identify equipment issues and determine effective repair solutions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Associate degree in diesel technology or a related field preferred.
· Two (2) years of fleet or agriculture equipment maintenance experience preferred.
· Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit required; CDL preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in diesel repair shop and in an
agricultural setting. Employees must be able to:
· Regularly required to stand, drive, climb, bend, twist, crawl, talk, see, hear, and walk;
· Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds (with assistance) on occasion;
· Ability to use fine motor skills when working on equipment;
· May need to work in small spaces, climb ladders, or access elevated areas in the course of work;
· Work long hours in a fast-paced environment, which may include weekends and holidays.
Employees will be exposed to:
· All types of weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and dust;
· Loud machinery, farm vehicles, and various equipment/tools (PPE may be required);
· Farm and industrial environment - including noise, dust, odors, manure, and varying terrain;
