KPMG is currently seeking a Senior Associate, SALT – Federal Royalty/Severance Tax to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) practice.
Responsibilities:
- Provide excellent client service to energy companies with federal royalty reporting obligations under Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR)
- Identify opportunities to reduce federal royalty exposure and optimize value through allowable transportation and processing deductions, unbundling analyses, and UCA benchmarking
- Lead and support complex engagements involving royalty compliance, valuation, and audit defense for onshore and offshore federal leases
- Collaborate with clients to implement royalty process improvements and digital solutions leveraging analytics, Alteryx, and other technologies
- Develop and mentor team members on technical royalty concepts and project execution, ensuring consistent quality across deliverables
- Interface with client accounting, production, and regulatory teams to gather documentation
- Stay current on ONRR and DOI regulatory developments, conduct technical research, and assess the potential impact of rule changes on client operations and reporting obligations
- Act with integrity, professionalism, and personal responsibility to uphold KPMG's respectful and courteous work environment
- Minimum three years of recent experience in federal royalty within a public accounting, consulting, or energy industry environment
- Bachelors degree, J.D., LL.M. in Taxation and/or Masters in Taxation (MST) from an accredited college/university
- Prior experience working with federal regulators, including ONRR auditors on data mining requests, compliance reviews, or audit responses
- Understanding of ONRR regulations, valuation principles, and transportation/processing allowance frameworks
- Experience with royalty compliance systems, audit defense strategies, and unbundling methodologies
