Principal Piping Engineer in ST Louis, MO or Kansas City, MO
Must be USC or GC or EAD.
Contract length: 1 year with extension
We are working this outside the tool for now and will loop in guidant once we make some headway. Looking for someone preferably in STL or KC. Project is scoped out until at least 2029 but this need will go longer than that.

Description
Purpose:
· Lead the development of efficient piping designs for capital projects supporting multiple sites and projects concurrently on a local and regional basis, and globally as needed across businesses.
· Translate process, utility, equipment, and project requirements into safe, maintainable, constructible piping layouts and design deliverables.
· Lead development and maintenance of piping design practices, CAD/3D modeling standards, drawing quality, and project design execution tools.
Key Tasks:
· Participate as a project team member and piping discipline lead for large, complex capital projects.
· Lead piping design and closeout documentation in accordance with the engineering execution process, including design basis information, drawing revisions, construction records, and as-built updates.
· Lead development of piping design requirements and assemble estimate information such as preliminary layouts, material takeoffs, tie-in information, and constructability input.
· Lead piping design package development including 3D models, piping layouts, plans, sections, isometrics, pipe support details, tie-in details, demolition drawings, bill of materials, and vendor information.
· Develop piping designs that satisfy project and process requirements while supporting safe operation, ergonomic access, maintainability, cleanability, drainage, constructability, and future maintenance needs.
· Model equipment connections, nozzles, valves, fittings, specialty items, pipe supports, access clearances, and routing constraints in the 3D design environment.
· Perform and lead field walkdowns to verify existing conditions, collect measurements, confirm tie-in points, identify interferences, and validate constructability before issuing design packages.
· Coordinate closely with process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, controls, construction, operations, maintenance, and project management stakeholders.
· Review P&IDs, utility flow diagrams, equipment layouts, piping specifications, vendor drawings, and field information to develop integrated piping deliverables.
· Provide expert guidance to project teams and engineers in piping layout, equipment arrangement, 3D modeling, constructability, installation sequencing, and construction details.
· Lead and provide technical oversight of equipment vendors, engineering consultants, EPCM firms, fabricators, and contractors for piping-related deliverables.
· Support design reviews, model reviews, hazard reviews, constructability reviews, and project readiness reviews by identifying piping risks, clashes, missing information, and technical gaps.
· Support project commissioning, checkout, and startup activities related to designer responsibilities, including resolution of field questions and documentation updates.
· Lead development and maintenance of Bayer piping design standards, CAD tools, drawing templates, details, and discipline-specific design practices.
Key Working Relation:
· Directly reports to a discipline Engineering Group Lead.
· Works closely with piping, mechanical, process, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, controls, project management, construction, maintenance, operations, and site engineering team members.
· Interfaces with external contacts including equipment vendors, design consultants, EPCM firms, fabricators, contractors, and construction managers.
· Interfaces with site operations, maintenance, reliability, safety, and business leaders to ensure designs are practical, safe, maintainable, and aligned with project objectives.
Qualification & Competencies:
· Associate Degree in Design or Drafting Technology, BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
· 12 years of relevant design experience, preferably in chemical, agricultural, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, process, or industrial facilities.
· Demonstrated capability with piping design deliverables including P&IDs, piping plans, sections, isometrics, pipe supports, tie-in details, demolition drawings, and as-built documentation.
· Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling tools used for plant design, such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, SmartPlant, MicroStation, or similar platforms.
· Working knowledge of piping specifications, materials, valves, fittings, supports, equipment nozzles, installation details, and plant layout principles.
· Familiarity with applicable piping codes, standards, and company specifications, including ASME B31.3 where applicable.
· Strong field verification, spatial visualization, constructability review, interdisciplinary coordination, technical communication, and drawing quality-control skills.
· Ability to lead design tasks, mentor designers, coordinate outside design resources, manage multiple project priorities, and communicate technical issues clearly.
