Koy Dingboom Oates, LLC is a dedicated law firm with more than 45 years of combined experience practicing primarily in the field of child welfare. Our practice spans nearly every segment of child welfare, from representing local county departments of human services as their county attorney; serving as guardian ad litem advocating for children and youth involved in dependency, delinquency, and truancy cases; representing foster parent and kinship caregivers; and handling appellate matters at all levels from administrative courts to the Colorado Supreme Court. We currently practice in both small and large jurisdictions throughout Colorado, giving us a strong understanding of different operations within the field and exposure to diverse clientele.

Job Description:

We are looking for an associate to join our team and support the effective representation of our wide array of clients. Applicants that are motivated to practice in this field are encouraged to apply, and we are open to and accepting of those wanting to work on a part-time or full-time basis as an independent contractor.

General Job Responsibilities:

- Represent county departments of human services as county attorney in child welfare, delinquency, child support, adult protection and/or administrative matters.

• Provide advice and counsel regarding statutory and constitutional duties and policy matters.
• Provide advice and training to county staff regarding federal and state laws related to department responsibilities.
• Act as liaison between the departments of human services and other attorneys, stakeholders and the courts.
• Meet with caseworkers, legal technicians, and supervisors to prepare cases for trial and appeal and develop legal framework for recommended court actions.
• Advise department employees regarding case preparation, court testimony, and legal issues related to court proceedings.
• Prepare pleadings and other legal documents for court filing at trial and appellate levels.
• Provide courtroom coverage for other attorneys as needed.
• Support other attorneys in ongoing litigation and appeals.

- Represent clients in court proceedings, including written advocacy, court hearings and/or administrative hearings and court and administrative appeals.

- Research and draft pleadings, policies and other written work product for court filing or presentation to clients.

- Monitor changes in statutory, case law, and constitutional duties as applicable to areas of practice.

- Maintain knowledge of Colorado statutes and court rules including juvenile and appellate rules, rules of evidence and rules of ethics.

- Prioritize and determine the specific projects and work activities to be performed and work independently through the completion of the project.

- Attend meetings with clients, families and stakeholders as needed.

- Maintain records and time-accounting in compliance with respective client requirements and applicable rules.

- Maintain timely and consistent communication with other firm attorneys and take appropriate action to maintain effective representation of the client.

- Interact effectively with individuals, groups and families at all levels; keep all interested and involved parties informed of the matters requiring attention.

- Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for the performance of the job.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school is required.
• Licensed to practice law in Colorado currently or within six months from date of hire required.
• Must successfully pass background check.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver’s License required.
• Previous child welfare experience welcomed, but not required.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
