SUMMARY: The HMR Technician is responsible for responding to hazardous materials incidents and ensuring the safe handling, containment, cleanup, and disposal of chemical, biological, and potentially radioactive substances. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to hazardous materials and plays a vital role in maintaining a safe working environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respond to hazardous materials incidents in a timely and professional manner.
- Identify, assess, contain, and remediate hazardous spills and releases.
- Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE), including Level A-D suits and SCBAs.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of HAZMAT equipment and supplies.
- Assist with site decontamination and environmental remediation projects.
- Collect and manage hazardous waste in compliance with EPA, OSHA, and DOT regulations.
- Maintain detailed reports, logs, and documentation of incidents and response activities.
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and training exercises.
- Support training initiatives for staff on proper handling of hazardous materials.
- Work closely with local emergency services, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field preferred.
- HMR experience is preferred but not a requirement
- HAZWOPER 40-hour Certification (preferred)
- DOT Hazardous Materials Certification (preferred)
- Strong understanding of hazardous materials handling procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Physical stamina and ability to work in hazardous environments and extreme conditions.
