Overview

KORE1, a nationwide provider of staffing and recruiting solutions, is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer for a full-time, direct-hire opportunity with a specialized structural engineering consulting firm in Portland, Oregon.

  • This opportunity is ideal for a motivated structural engineer with 4–8 years of experience who enjoys technically challenging projects and wants to take on increasing design, project coordination, and leadership responsibilities.
  • The firm specializes in complex structural engineering projects, with particular emphasis on seismic design, seismic rehabilitation, renovation, and challenging building structures. Projects range from smaller, specialized assignments to major developments with construction values exceeding $400 million.

Unlike larger engineering organizations where responsibilities may be narrowly defined, this position offers exposure to the full project lifecycle, from early design and structural analysis through construction administration. Engineers work directly with experienced principals and senior engineers while developing the technical expertise and leadership skills needed to advance toward senior engineering and project management roles.

The ideal candidate is a self-directed, technically strong structural engineer with a passion for solving difficult engineering problems, mentoring junior staff, and pursuing continued professional growth, including PE and SE licensure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis, engineering calculations, and design for building structures using steel, concrete, wood, and masonry.
  • Develop structural design concepts, calculations, technical reports, and construction documentation for new construction, renovation, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Support complex seismic design, seismic evaluation, and structural rehabilitation projects using applicable building codes and engineering standards.
  • Prepare and coordinate structural construction documents using Revit and other engineering design tools.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, consultants, and other engineering disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct site visits, perform structural observations, review shop drawings, and respond to RFIs during construction.
  • Participate in project coordination, design reviews, quality assurance, and quality control activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to entry-level engineers and interns.
  • Take increasing ownership of project deliverables, schedules, and technical problem-solving responsibilities.
  • Support client relationships, proposals, and business development efforts as experience progresses.

Required Qualifications

  • 4–8 years of professional structural engineering experience, preferably involving building structures.
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering emphasis, or a closely related structural engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or a clear path to obtaining licensure within approximately 12 months of hire.
  • For candidates approaching eight years of experience, Structural Engineer (SE) licensure or the ability to obtain it within approximately 12 months.
  • Experience designing building structures using steel, concrete, wood, and/or masonry.
  • Working knowledge of structural engineering codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, AISC, ACI, and NDS.
  • Experience with structural analysis software such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, SAFE, or comparable applications.
  • Experience using Revit and Bluebeam Revu for structural documentation and coordination.
  • Strong structural analysis, engineering judgment, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to coordinate with architects, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable taking ownership of technical assignments while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work primarily onsite in the Portland office to support project collaboration and mentorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with seismic evaluation, seismic retrofit, structural rehabilitation, and renovation of existing buildings.
  • Strong familiarity with ASCE 41 and performance-based seismic evaluation or rehabilitation methodologies.
  • Experience working on technically complex structural projects requiring advanced analysis and creative engineering solutions.
  • Active PE license with demonstrated progress toward SE licensure.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical guidance to less-experienced team members.
  • Background working in a structural engineering consulting environment with direct client and project team interaction.
  • Interest in advancing into senior engineering, project management, or future technical leadership responsibilities.

Professional Development & Career Growth

This opportunity offers a clear path for engineers interested in expanding their technical expertise and taking on greater responsibility.

The firm provides:

  • Direct mentorship from experienced principals and senior structural engineers.
  • Financial support for PE and SE licensure.
  • Continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Exposure to diverse and technically challenging structural engineering projects.
  • Opportunities to mentor junior engineers and develop project leadership skills.
  • Long-term advancement potential as the organization continues to develop its next generation of engineering leaders.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • This position is based in Portland, Oregon, with an expectation that the engineer will work primarily onsite to support collaboration, project coordination, and mentorship of junior staff.
  • The organization maintains a flexible work environment and may accommodate individual scheduling needs on a case-by-case basis. However, regular in-office presence is an important component of this position.
  • The firm operates with a collaborative, entrepreneurial approach and emphasizes technical excellence, professional development, and individual ownership of engineering work.
  • Project demands may occasionally require additional hours beyond a standard 40-hour workweek.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $97,800–$135,300 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and licensure.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with profit sharing.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • Paid time off and 10 paid holidays.
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Fitness reimbursement program.
  • Onsite gym with changing rooms and showers.
  • Secure onsite bicycle storage.
  • Financial assistance for professional licensure and continuing education.
