The overall role of an Oncologist is to develop and execute treatment plans that provide the best possible outcomes for patients. To fulfill this responsibility, they may perform the following job duties, which you can add to your oncology job description:

Conducting initial examinations and ordering blood work, imaging and other diagnostic tests

Making diagnoses of the type and stage of cancer based on test findings

Establishing treatment plans that may include radiation, chemotherapy, medications and surgical procedures

Coordinating care with other physicians and medical professionals

Explaining benefits, side effects and risks of treatments to patients

Educating patients on how to cope with the effects of treatments and care for themselves at home

Answering patients questions about their symptoms, prognosis and treatment plans

Maintaining accurate patient records and safeguarding patient privacy

Overview

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical history review, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
• Develop personalized treatment plans utilizing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and other advanced oncological interventions.
• Coordinate with radiology departments to interpret medical imaging such as CT scans, MRI, PET scans, and mammography to inform diagnosis and treatment strategies.
• Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic and EMR systems to document patient encounters accurately and efficiently.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and nursing staff to ensure integrated patient care.
• Manage inpatient and outpatient oncology cases, overseeing treatment administration and monitoring patient progress throughout therapy cycles.
• Participate in clinical research trials to advance cancer treatment options and contribute to ongoing medical knowledge.
• Educate patients and their families about diagnosis, treatment options, potential side effects, and supportive care measures such as pain management and palliative medicine.
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and hospital standards for patient confidentiality and safety.
• Stay current with emerging oncology treatments, medical terminology updates, and best practices through continuous professional development.

Experience

• Proven experience as an Oncologist or in a similar specialized role within an inpatient or outpatient setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency with EHR systems such as Epic or similar platforms for documentation and clinical workflows.
• Strong background in medical imaging interpretation relevant to oncology diagnostics including CT scans, PET scans, mammography, and nuclear medicine procedures.
• Experience managing complex cases involving radiation therapy, chemotherapy administration, immunotherapy, targeted treatments, and perioperative care.
• Familiarity with clinical research protocols related to oncology trials and familiarity with CPT coding for billing purposes.
• Knowledge of medical office procedures including patient assessment, discharge planning, medical records management, and medical terminology.
• Ability to handle high-pressure situations with excellent critical care experience when managing acute pain or emergency oncology cases.
• Prior involvement in multidisciplinary team collaboration across specialties such as radiology (interventional radiography), pathology, cardiology (cardiac catheterization), endocrinology (reproductive endocrinology), dermatology (dermatology treatments), pulmonology (pulmonary care), or neurology (neurocritical care) is advantageous.
